Ben, I also like Firefox and will appreciate your assist in
setting me up with
the best extensions and add-ons. Now this is what I then
did. Again I tried to
do a complete uninstall of Firefox and then re-install it
from scratch as
follows:
1. Add/Remove ... removed Firefox 1.5.0.6 (approx 15MB)
2. Removed Mozilla Firefox folder from Program Files
3. Removed Mozilla from C:Documents and
SettingsCompaq_OwnerLocal
SettingsApplication Data (Note that Local Setting is by
default a hidden
folder so I missed it last time).
4. At the same time, I removed "My EverNote Files"
from C:Documents and
SettingsCompaq_OwnerMy Documents (seems I missed that last
time). I never
think of looking in C:Documents and SettingsCompaq_Owner
for anything being
so accustomed to the Program Files folder.
5. Using Search ... Removed "Firefox setup exe"
and "Firefox.exe" from
C:WindowsPrefetch (no idea what prefetch means)
6. Using RegSeeker ... Removed all references to Firefox and
Mozilla in
registry
7. With no references to either Firefox or Mozilla (except
my shortcuts in the
Start menu and the setup file in my flash drive), I did a
full reboot.
8. Downloaded another setup file for Firefox (still version
1.5.0.6 but wasn't
taking any chances)
9. Installed this newer version of Firefox, still 1.5.0.6
(with the Google
toolbar which I disable since there is already a googls
search to the right of
the address bar).
And my bookmarks are still listed, EverNote button is to the
right of the
Homepage button, and "Add to EverNote" line is
still on bottom of the
right-click context menu.
How could this be? Has to be that I am doing something
wrong. My Firefox
configurations have to be somewhere on the computer. Or this
is the mystery of
mysteries and I'll wait for the next time I do a complete
re-install of the
system (which I do maybe once a year just for the fun of
seeing a fresh brand
new install). I won't do it now since everything is working
just fine (and
fast probably because at least 100 worthless pre-installed
programs and files
have been safely deleted. Counting those wild games that
Compaq includes, and
unnecessary fonts and registry keys, easily triples that
amount.).
It took a lot of trial and error, lot of backing up, lot of
"holdings" in a
"Hold" folder I keep on the desktop waiting to see
what happens, and in the
next system restore (when necessary) it'll be a lot easier.
And maybe it's a
personality matter but this is the way I know the computer
is mine. This is
what I did when I had Windows 98, and when I finally became
"master of my
domain" (and expression used in one of the Seinfeld
episodes but in a
different sense), I upgraded to Windows XP and started all
over again, giving
Sisyphus has a chance to tell stories about another endless
task --- Harold.
