Harold, I can agree with you whole heartedly. Naysayers
aside, the same
with investing in Microsoft, Apple, Whistler/Blackcomb
resorts, etc.
before they made it big. Even Dell before they began to fall
out of
favour and started buying out the competition to cushion the
decline
would have been favourable, did you know they bought out
Alienware so
they could have a better stake in gaming computers?
Me, I like investing time in something which isn't as
financially
evident as all the above: Ubuntu Linux. It's free to buy,
freely
supported, and freely updated but most people would pay to
have it
tweaked and tooled with.
Just my 2 cents, and happy holidays to all!

Glad to hear there's another Ubuntu fan out there.
I installed this on my extra machine a couple of weeks ago,
and it's
probably the best Linux distro I've fooled with yet.
The install was very fast and trouble free, the media apps
worked
without any tweaking (Fedora was a real pain) and it runs
reasonably
fast on my ancient board.
Adding a second HD and getting Samba to work was much more
difficult in
Ubuntu than in any other OS I've ever tried, but all is well
now.
With the bloated and security-crippled Vista coming soon,
Ubuntu has a
lot going for it.

Hugh, did you install the latest release, 6.10 or was it
6.06?
I'm still running 6.06 on an old Sempron based mobo and it
offers far
more installed than any other OS. I haven't had problems
with hdd
swapping but Samba was a chore.
I try to encourage it to people who can't afford new
hardware for XP or
Vista or even those OS's themselves. I have tried in on an
AMD 64 and it
is very speedy, but I haven't tried it on an old Mac yet.
It's what I like about Ubuntu and other distro's, it enables
older
hardware to continue to serve owner's smoothly and securely
into the future.
I'm glad you do enjoy Ubuntu as well!
Just my 2 cents,

It's 6.1, Peter.
The HD problem may have been caused by not paying enough
attention
during install. I had Win 2K installed prior to this, and
even though I
didn't want to dual-boot, that's where I ended up. I then
formatted the
2d HD, and it took many hoops to get this drive recognized.
On the other
hand, now I know where FSTAB is.
I would be very happy to help people with any Linux distro,
but there
just isn't that kind of curiosity amongst my acquaintances.
I did
install Fedora for one friend, but he's given up on it. It's
very rare
for me to get a question that goes beyond email, or some
hardware/OS
glitch that affects immediate operations. I don't know what
this means.
Happy holidays to all.
