This is my shop computer and is self built ie with parts off
the shelf.
It is AMD Athlon XP2200+ 1.8GHz and 512 of ram.
Using XP pro Ver 2002
with SP2.
My C drive is a 40 gig drive with only 1 gig free! Much of
the size is
in the Programs on the drive. (about 6 gig)
Should I buy a larger drive? If so, any recommendations?
If so how do I transfer date from the C to any other drive?
Most of the Programs are still in use so deleting them is
not an option
I want to do.
If I were to reinstall some of these programs on another
drive would
that work ok or does that cause problems?
I have been using a smaller drive (6 gig) for data backup
and I could
install something bigger but still not sure the best way to
relieve the
fullness.
Thanks

The easiest way to solve the problem is to get a larger
drive.
All new drives come with cloning software that will transfer
the
existing install and allow you to use the new drive as
master.
Alternatively, you could install the new drive as a slave
and just
transfer your data to it, but you might just be putting off
the inevitable.
You could also get easy cleaner:
http://www
.majorgeeks.com/download414.html
Run the unnecessary files module and the registry cleaner.
This safe to
use and will find a ton of unneeded stuff.

40 gig ??? that barely covers the main operating system. I
just
upgraded from a 160 gig drive to a 250 gig ($60 after
rebates and price
reduction). I have a second drive of 100 gig that I will
replace with
the 160 that I removed. The 100 gig remaining will go to
one of the
external drives. The best way to transfer to another drive
is to use
True Image (v10) which has lots of options including
creating additional
partions and then cloning your current C drive to the C
partition on the
new drive. Because XP PRo keeps all sorts of backups and
backups of
backups, your OS drive will do nothing but continue to grow
with use.
Hard drive space is very CHEAP now days and its not worth
the hassles to
try to keep a small drive open.

If you only have two hard drives and, I assume, some sort of
optical drive
then you could just add a hard drive.
I would question though what's taking up 39 GB of space on
your main drive
if the programs only total 6 GB. That doesn't sound right
unless you have
some data base program or something that has huge data
files. Many programs
especially graphics programs that store photo thumbnails,
etc can have large
data store but you can always move the data files to another
drive without
having to move the program itself. Also if you haven't done
any routine
maintenance lately, temporary files can get very large.
I would get some program that shows where all your space is
going. Get
something like Treesize
http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml#treesi
ze and look at what's
taking up all that space. It's free and works really well.
Also pay attention to the sum of the occupied space and the
free space on
the drive. It ought to add up to somewhere around 39 GB or
so. I had a
situation once where a program was generating files
fragments that don't
show up anywhere but still took up space. I lost almost 30
GB on a hard
drive before I noticed the discrepancy. Error checking will
take care of
those. You might want to run WinXp error checking anyway
just to make sure.
If it turns out that you want to replace your C drive, many
retail hard
drives come with software that will clone the old drive to
the new drive.
The oem versions of hard drives don't come with that
software.
Before you do anything, figure out what is taking up all the
space on your C
dive.

Larry, with a 40 gb drive you should have more room to spare
with only
6gb of programs unless you have a lot of video on the drive.
Set your IE
cache to 81 mb or less, clean out your trash in your email
and compact
the files, set the space reserved for your recycle bin to
3%. Use
Easycleaner as per Hugh's instructions as well
For hard drives recommendations there is only a few
manufacturers now,
primarily Seagate (who just bought out Maxtor) and Western
Digital. I
use Seagate because of their 5 year warranty, a 250gb drive
runs for
under $90.00 CAD right now with larger drives experiencing
falling
prices too.
All drives come with drive cloning tools that are quite
straight forward.
