Hello again,

Curious to know what the more experienced members of the
group think of this
program; it continues with where the Task Manager leaves
off. It's somewhat
over my head in technical matters. I must have found out
about it from one of
the newsletters I get and It's a freebie, called Process
Explorer, comes with
a full Help window, and this is the website. For installing,
what I did was
open the zip file (what's with XP; zip files open up without
winzip?), placed
the exe file and the help file in a new folder I named
Process Explorer, put
it in Program Files, and then made a shortcut to the exe
file. It works and
now maybe someone can tell me what it is all about

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys
internals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx
... here is the description it gives.

"Ever wonder which program has a particular file or
directory open? Now you
can find out. Process Explorer shows you information about
which handles and
DLLs processes have opened or loaded.

The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows.
The top window
always shows a list of the currently active processes,
including the names of
their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in
the bottom window
depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in
handle mode
you'll see the handles that the process selected in the top
window has opened;
if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you'll see the DLLs and
memory-mapped files
that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a
powerful search
capability that will quickly show you which processes have
particular handles
opened or DLLs loaded.

The unique capabilities of Process Explorer make it useful
for tracking down
DLL-version problems or handle leaks, and provide insight
into the way Windows
and applications work. Process Explorer works on Windows
9x/Me, Windows NT
4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Server 2003, and 64-bit
versions of Windows for
x64 processors, and Windows Vista." --- Harold

Process explorer is a technical resource that can come in
handy for
explaining what's going ion under the hood. I've had it for
while, but
have always found Task Manager to be adequate for the
troubleshooting I do.
If you want a really cool piece of software, try siw.exe:

Lots of very useful info, including some stored passwords.

Hugh,

That's a really nice little program. Thanks for sharing.
It reveals a ton of info.

Thanks,
