Ben and Larry, thanks for the replies. (I'm not receiving
ANY
email from this list at all.....again, and also once again
only
a portion of my posts are making it to the list).
I will NEVER get any AVG product due to their total lack of
support. In fact, there's not even any way to register at
their forums! If you send an email to AVG, they bounce all
email back that has no registration # in it, but you can't
get
a registration # unless you BUY their product, and who's
going
to buy something that won't work?? It's a causality loop.
Have you tried to update it manually (and if so, what's the
process for that?)
Thanks,
-Clint

Anti-spyware won't update for me either. It's done this
before. The AVG AV
free updates ok. Obviously different servers.
Ben Moore
days back I installed it and it was updating ok. Now I
keep
getting "Downloading updates.....receive
data......Error:
server is not ready to serve" or something like that
(kind of
an oxymoron isn't it. LOL). I would assume the same thing
would happen when trying to update AVG AV.
Thanks,
-Clint

Did you register through the program itself?
http://forum.griso
ft.cz/freeforum/ says this:
"The AVG Free Forum has been created to provide users
of AVG Free with
a platform to share knowledge and discuss issues with other
knowledgeable AVG Free users. Registration is required in
order to be
able to submit questions and issues. However, even
non-registered users
are able to participate in read-only mode. To register for
the AVG Free
Forum and other On-line Services, please go to the
Information menu in
your installed AVG Free and select Register Online. If you
are not using
AVG Free, please download and install AVG Free Edition and
then go to
the Information menu and select Register Online."
Is this how you registered?
I have updated AVG free manually in the past whenever it
locks up, there
are good instructions here
http://f
orum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?1,27796,27796
I stopped recommending AVG Free as there were too many false
positives
and have switched over to Avast! for free protection
ht
tp://www.avast.com/eng/free_virus_protectio.html or
NOD32 for paid
protection http://www.eset.com/
Customers of mine who did move over to paid version of AVG
have reported
completely different experiences over those of the free
stuff and the
support is complete as well.

Clint, if you are considering buying the product, contact
sales for tech
support. That's what the web site says.
The online up date still doesn't work for me either. As I
remember one time
before it was out for a couple of weeks. I just tried the
manual update
from http://www
.ewido.net/en/download/updates/. The download from
there
installs new .dat files correctly but the AVG program still
shows no update
in it's info. I assume that it would use the new signatures
when it scans.
Avg Anti spyware is not nearly as good in the free version
as the A/V
product.
And while I'm on the subject. I'm beginning to suspect that
all this anti
spyware software is nothing but marketing. I've installed a
bunch of these
programs over the last few years and none of them have ever
found anything
but some tracking cookies which I periodically get rid of
myself with other
programs. I'm not even sure what they are supposed to find
and if you read
the web sites they are sort of vague on that point. What
threat exactly is
one of these programs going to find that you're a/v program
wouldn't find?
I would copy you on this mail, Clint but I have no idea what
a good email
address for you is anymore.

Thanks for the reply. Here's part of what I emailed them
(which was bounced back like I said).
--------------
No where is there any "Register" link, only
"Login" links!
"Goto: Forum List . Back To List . Search . Log In
Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum."
It says this at the top of the forum page:
http://forum.griso
ft.cz/freeforum/
"If you are not using AVG Free, please download and
install AVG
Free Edition and then go to the Information menu and select
Register Online."
And there is no "Register online" area in AVG AS!
anti-spyware program. So I can't register therefore I
cannot
post in the forums to ask about this. I can't believe no
one
is mentioning this at the forums! I do see though how to
update it manually there at least. Ah I just found this
http://f
orum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?9,94728,backpage=4,sv
= ,
they FAIL TO TELL YOU that with the free version you have
to
update it manually! BUT, that's after 30 days and it's
only
been installed about a week. So Ben, if yours has been
installed for more than 30 days that's why yours won't
update.
But it seems update issues are common with AS. Manual
update
info is here:
http://f
orum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?9,98099,backpage=1,sv
=
Well I tried the manual update and that doesn't even work!
Still shows updates are from 4-26. Maybe, hopefully, that
was
the last updates they had. Can anyone vouch for that?

I can't, email to them is also bounced back requiring that
registration cr p!
Our emails crossed, I had similar info in what I just posted
about the manual updates.
Yes, there's a TON of bogus blackware anti-malware programs
out
there. I don't think this is one of them because they have
a
decent rep at least for their AV software for being legit,
although it isn't that great at finding things.
AVG AS found something on my PC that all my other programs
missed, but it was only a Cookie, and all my Cookies are set
to
automatically dump when the last IE window is closed anyway
(except those I opted to keep). These server issues
certainly
don't add any credence to their competence.
I seem to be getting posts again now, at least some of them.
The last address you used for me is still good. This one
for
that matter.
