Hello again (using Win XP),

Following your discussion, now is the moment of decision and
I'm faced with
Avg Free and Avast Free. I've been using Avg with no
apparent harm to the
computer nor am I sure it does any good. It's just there in
my sys tray
upgrading every once in a while and that's it. What's the
consensus in the
group? Is it Avg or Avast? Or should I do neither and remove
ZoneAlarm and as
Hugh once suggested, use Windows Defender to do the job of
both? Right now I
have Avg, ZoneAlarm, Windows Defender, Ad-aware, and Spybot.
In matters of
health, my computer is better protected than I am. ---

Hi Harold,

The Avg free is fine. I tried both Avg and Avast and liked
the Avg better.
The thing Clint and I and others have been talking about is
the Avg
anti-spyware not the A/V. I've discovered you can't write
the word vi*us on
this list or the mail doesn't ever go through.

Zone Alarm's principle function is as a firewall. I would
not stop using
it.

I haven't tried Windows defender but that's a personal
thing. I will not
use any more Microsoft software than I have to.

I've used AVG for several years without a virus of any kind.
I've
installed it on many other computers, and they've never had
a virus. It
consistently gets high ratings.
Some speak highly of Avast, but I've only used it briefly.
Windows defender does a good job, and should be on every
computer that
uses the 'net, but you also need a second anti-spyware, so I
use Ad
Aware weekly, and have installed the immunize feature of
Spybot.
I spend a lot of time on the web, and have no,none, nada
problemas.
That said, I regularly help a young man who's fond of porn,
and the
other problems I see come from the cheezier online games.
Use the above programs, keep your system updated, get your
porn from
newsgroups and stay away from no-name games and you'll be as
safe as
it's possible to be.
AVG has a log (Test Center/Test Results) and a virus vault,
so you can
always check up on what it's been doing.

I've used AVG, Avast!, and now NOD32 mainly for it's speed
in updating
and scanning with the highest success rate around.

For the firewall I use Zonealarm which replaced Sygate which
got bought
up by Symantec and I will not use any bloated software from
Symantec.

I use Ad-aware monthly, though the only things I have is
malicious cookies.

I use a giant HOSTS file to block many malicious sites,
ad-ware sites, etc.

I'm switching to Ubuntu this weekend so I won't need AVG,
Avast!, NOD32,
or any ad-ware scanners.

Also I never use IE, OE, MSN, Yahoo, MS office, or WMP. I
leave those to
my clients.

I'm on the web a lot, not as much as 5 years ago but it
still takes up a
lot of time.

So, you're saying that If I write, "Virus", this
email won't go through?
How about virus without quotes?
Bizarre.

I guess I'm mistaken, Hugh. Every once in a while I write
an email to this
list that never appears. I go back and look at what I sent
and to make sure
I deleted the PC works tag and all seems ok. But, the
missing mail always
seems to contain the word... ok I'll say it... virus. I
always thought that
was pretty silly blocking the word virus as if any self
respecting virus
would label itself. Then I saw someone else using the vi*us
approach and
seemed to recall somewhere a discussion that there were
words that would
cause the list to block an email.

Boy do I feel liberated now. Virus, virus, virus, virus ...

Greetings All

The word virus was flagged at one time because the list was
a target for
those stupid false virus reports. It was removed many
moons ago. Come
to think of it, I haven't seen one of those things for quite
a while,
any one else seen one lately?

It's something else and it also happens to me (messages
never
showing up). They also don't show in the archives. Then
other
times, they'll SHOW in the archives but never to the list.
Still other times they will go to the list, but never show
in
the archives!

Just some FYI, I've been using Sygate Pro 5.5 for years and

it's not bloated. Symantec didn't change Sygate's core or
software package to make it more bloated. Now if they are
making NEW Sygate products, then that may be a different
story.
