Well like I said, I've never heard of what you described,
so if
you're saying the reg file didn't fix it, I can't tell
you what
else to try. Sorry. If you
are dragging the windows to
the size you want, and that's not being remembered, I
don't
know what to tell you, that should have worked. Do you have

checked in Folder Options "remember each folder's
view
settings"? That is "supposed" to work.
Have you tried this:
http://www.g
oogle.com/search?hl=en&lr=lang_en&newwindow=1&sa
fe=off&as_qdr=all&q=+%22remember+each+folder%27s+vie
w+settings%22&lr=lang_en

The registry doesn't always use real absolute numbers. It
may
use binary, dword, hexadecimal, etc. You can use any
scientific calculator, even the integrated Windows
calculator
and change it to "Scientific" and you can
convert these binary,
dword, and hexadecimal values to other inflections, like
back
and forth.

What Ben was saying is that Dword (hex or hexadecimal) of
1F40
= 8000. You open the calculator and see how that works. If

for example you wanted to change that 8000 to 7000, you'd
enter
"7000" in the calc and then dot
"Hex" and you'd see 7000 would
be 1B58, so you'd put that in place of the 1F40.

I know it may seem a bit amazing, but Windows is pretty
stupid.
It can only open a file if you (or a program, etc.) tells it

HOW to open it. This is done with the (usually) 3 letter
file
extension. In default installations this is hidden, but if
one
opts to uncheck the box "Hide file extensions for
known file
types" you'll see these .nnn (x not used for obvious
reasons)
extensions showing after each file on your HD. Text files,
like for Notepad, are of course .txt and registry files are
.reg . It is with all these extensions that Windows knows
HOW
to open any file and with what type of program. .txt of
course
tells it to use Notepad as default, .reg tells Windows to
use
the Registry Editor or Registry program to open .reg files.
On
many file types you can change the extension and have other
programs opening them where some can still be read. Like if

you want to try and read what's in a .exe file, change it
to
.txt and you can view it in Notepad. (In my case, I just
put a
shortcut to Metapad [great powerful Notepad replacement] in
my
right click context and "Send to......" area so
I can send any
file type to Metapad and read what's in it. That's much
easier
and faster).

You can also change a .txt file to .html or .htm for example

and then IE will open it as a webpage! This is because you
changed the file association extension of that file from
Notepad (.txt), to IE (.ht*).

On my PC I have Metapad set to automatically open *ALL*
registry (.reg) files so I can just simply click them to
read
what's in them. Then if I want to add/import it to the
registry, I can just right click and "Open
with...." then pick
"Registry editor", then it goes to the Registry.

You can't FULLY backup the Registry with the option in the
toolbar. You have to use something like ERUNT (free) which
FULLY and TOTALLY backs up the ENTIRE registry. I have it
set
on my PC to automatically do a reg backup each time the PC
boots. That way if something gets screwed up, I can simply
click the previous backup and the Registry is restored to
that
point. It's a simple shortcut in the Start Up folder, it
runs,
does the backup, then shuts down all in seconds.

Clint, I was just kidding there on the difference between
the
original size
of your "AxPsHook" posting which came right
after this "folder
size"
posting. Look how much I learned from you on changing a
notepad
text to a
Registry file. Strangely enough, some of those links on
<htt
p://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm> open to a

download dialog
box and some of the links open to a page with Registry text
like what you
see below. This is very strange but this is not the
immediate
problem.

So I did what you suggest; Ben Moore agrees that bagMRU size
is
a dword
value; in decimal it's 8000 (I'm writing this not fully
understanding the
"technicalities" of this Registry talk, but I
still enjoy
working there) and
I put the HKEY lines you see below into Notepad, and saved
it
with a .reg
extension. To this newbie here (which I'll always remain),
it's
a miracle
how it changed to a Registry file ... but there it is. Of
course, at this
point I created a system restore point before going any
further.

I then clicked that new Registry file (it's really a tiny
part
of the
Registry and must have some name), and it added itself to
the
main Registry.
It's as though it were some part of the large Registry that
I
might have
originally saved (backed up). And there we are. Problem is
that
with this
Registry change, the folders continue to open large ...
UNLESS
I'm supposed
to make some change in lines before the "notepad to
registry"
move. Maybe
you can explain that. Maybe I have to restart the computer;
but
changing the
registry, from my little experience with it, doesn't
usually
require a
rebooting.

Finally, I don't understand why the Tools, Folder Options,
View, click
"Apply to All Folders" ... doesn't work. You
know what? Maybe
I'll just have
to live with folders opening a bit large than I'd like;
things
ike that
should be the worst problems should only be the worst
problems
we have in
life
