Jeff, I'm running a Compaq Laptop w/Linux Linspire v-5.427
using Belkin 
BCM 4306 802.11b/g.
Goto Control center/Network Settings $ Profiles.
Near the bottom check the option " LOAD NETWORK
MONITOR ON STARTUP."
Hope your XP has these options.
