The new ATX power supply standard now is 24-pin, previously
was
20-pin. The extra 4 pins are 3.3v and Ground. This is for
the
ATX POWER CONNECTOR, which has a detachable "square
4-pin" plug
connector.
Now if you're talking about a SEPARATE square 4-pin
connector
with (usually) 2 black and 2 yellow wires, that has been
around
for years and that's for certain AMD and P4 CPU mobo's
which
require the special connector for their additional power
requirements. It's usually next to the CPU socket. The PC
won't boot without power going to that connector.
