As a followup:
I've tested the page again, and the files are indeed on the
server and
open successfully from the ftp client. They, however still
don't open
in the link on the page (the link points to e.g. "http://www.my.page/
upload/" while the files themselves reside in "http://www.my.page/cgi-
bin/www.my.page/upload" [with the last
"www.my.page/upload" being the
name of the folder that appears as a child to the cgi-bin
folder]
