Thanks to all those who answered.
Sorry for NOT being clear
1. I intend to send a FILE (by mail)
2. I intend to encrypt the file [not the mail itself]
3. PGP provides a SDA facility, where the recipient can just punch in
a password and open the archive. [ I agree this is NOT upto public key
encryption standards etc.. still, this is the best when the recipient
does NOT know / does NOT use PGP / GPG ]
4. I'm looking for a SDA in GPG or a similar freeware facility to
encrypt a FILE - not a mail
thanks in advance
regards
maniams

is there a way to create an Self Decrypting Archive with GPG / or are
there good free tools to do that ?

You could create a self-extracting 7z archive that is
password-protected. It will even encrypt the file names. I don't know
how secure it is, though.
www.7-zip.org
The software and the format is licensed under the LGPL. And 7-zip is
an excellent compression format, too. Of course, if the person you
send it to doesn't use Windows, this won't work because it creates a
Win32 executable.
That's just one idea.

I've never heard of a SFX mail before, nor could I imagine
the purpose
or use of same.
As John mentioned, GPGshell (a key manager) includes a SFX
utility. It
uses InfoZIP. Your file is symmetrically encrypted, then
packaged with
your local copy of gpg.exe, the GPL, and a generated batch
file that
will extract and decrypt the file when the SFX is launched.
You can GPGshell at http://www.jum
aros.de/rsoft/index.html

IIRC there is also a version of WinZip that uses AES256 to encrypt its
protected ZIP files. I don't know what RAR uses for its crypto, but it
would be worth finding out.

Cryptainer LE (which makes encrypted containers up to 25 MB, in this
free version) has option "Encrypt File to Send by Email". It uses
Blowfish algorithm of 128 bits (commercial version uses up to 448 bits).
If you are on PGPBOT (the OT branch of PGPB that accepts attachments)
you can see an example I CC there attached, with my signature;
the3cycle.exe.
PowerArchiver 2001 is also free and makes self-extracting encrypted
archives, but I don't know what algorithm it uses.
There are lots of them around indeed, but I can't recall more at the
moment.

thanks to all those who replied
I was looking for a feature exactly similar to the PGP's SELF DECRYPTING
