Hi All
What do people here recommend be used to sign and/or encrypt
e-mail
messages? I am currently trying to use pgp ver 6.5.8.

Depends on what operating system you're using.
For Windows Vista, you're out of luck. No version of PGP
has been
tested for compatibility with Vista.
For Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP, I recommend GnuPG 1.4.6
(http://www.gnupg.org)
for crypto support, with the excellent
Thunderbird email client (http://www.mozilla.com).
The interface
between the two is provided by Enigmail (http://enigmail.mozdev.org
).
If you want to run PGP instead, _please_ use the latest
version of PGP.
6.5.8 is old, decrepit, and is very likely to be pretty
much useless in
just a couple of years.
For most flavors of UNIX, I recommend GnuPG 1.4.6 +
Thunderbird + Enigmail.
For Mac OS X, I recommend GnuPG 1.4.6 + Thunderbird +
Enigmail, or else
GnuPG 1.4.6 + GPGMail. I do not recommend PGP for OS X.

I am having problems verifying signatures already. The
latest version
I presume is 9.5 which probably costs more than I would be
like to
spend.

Do you, or anyone here, know if or how this would work with
TheBat?

9.5 is still available as a freeware edition. It lacks some
of the
features present in the payware edition, but it still does
all the
major tasks.

GnuPG is working very well with TheBat!. I am using the
package
available at http://www.gpg4win.org/
GnuPG is well integrated into TheBat and even PGP-MIME is
fully
supported without any proxy or additional plugin.
I to not know if there is an active english user community,
but the
german one is here: http://www.batboard.net

I don't have any experience with PGP 9x, but I can tell you
that GnuPG
runs quite well with The Bat!.
