Graham,

It seems like Linux just never gets over that first
marketshare hump, to
where almost all hardware drivers and most all specialized
software is
available and up-to-date for it. Do you see that changing
anytime soon?

It's a great tool for people who run networks, people who
like to tinker
with code, or skinflints who refuse to pay for an OS, but
that's still a
small slice of the user base.

Maybe if it was more standardized...but if it's more
standardized, then
it's less "open." Chicken or egg?

Randy

If standardizarion is your gig, I strongly recommend Ubuntu.
I'm running
6.10 and everything works, first time, no hassles. I've
never had any
trouble with my hardware, and the OpenOffice.org suite
builds office
documents in standardized formats.

Yes. It already is, in fact. The hardware situation is
improving
very rapidly, to the point where I can use just about all
the
hardware on my MacBook Pro from within Debian Linux without
any major
tweaks needed.

The software situation is, unfortunately, slower to change.
But then
again, I don't need all that much in the way of specialized

software. The specialized software I do need, I tend to
write myself.

Standardization is not the enemy of openness. There's an
ANSI/ISO
standard for Linux distributions--the project which was
formerly
called the Linux Standards Base. LSB-compliant software
should work
well across many different distributions without changes.

TCP/IP is a standard, but that hasn't impaired the
availability of
FOSS TCP/IP stacks.
