This is one of the most-frequently-asked questions about GnuPG. So you're definitely not alone. Short answer: preferences are used to advertise to the world what you can do, and what you prefer others to do. Preferences are not used to tell GnuPG what you want it to do on your behalf. For that, add the line "personal-digest-preferences" to your gpg.conf file, with your preferences in descending order. You can use either alphanumeric codes or algorithm names here. For instance, my gpg.conf includes the line personal-hash-preferences H8 H10 H9 H3 H2 H1 This means GnuPG will try SHA256, then SHA512, SHA384, RIPEMD160, SHA1 and MD5, in that order. As soon as it finds a hash that the other person can use, it'll use that one. Hello Robert, Hendrik, John I found a file called options.skel which looks like a template for the gpg.conf file. I copied this file to my gpg.conf file and included the line personal-hash-preferences H8 H10 H9 H3 H2 H1 Nothing has changed so I still must be missing something obvious.
