Hash: SHA1

Hi All

I have been trying to change the hash that is used with this
address.
I used the 'setpref' command (and updpref) and the
preference list is
modified.

The problem is that SHA1 is always included in the pref list
and that
hash is always used.

OK, try adding 'cert-digest-algo xxxxxx' to your gpg.conf
File. Also,
it would help if I knew exactly what Options are available
within WinPT.

I was asking the same question some time ago (23.10.2006)
and got very
compete answer and solution. The subject of the messages
was
"Moving away from SHA1 in GnuPG using existing PGP8 key

If you can not find this in the list archive, I can send it

This is one of the most-frequently-asked questions about
GnuPG. So
you're definitely not alone.

Short answer: preferences are used to advertise to the world
what you
can do, and what you prefer others to do.

Preferences are not used to tell GnuPG what you want it to
do on your
behalf. For that, add the line
"personal-digest-preferences" to your
gpg.conf file, with your preferences in descending order.
You can
use either alphanumeric codes or algorithm names here. For
instance,
my gpg.conf includes the line

personal-hash-preferences H8 H10 H9 H3 H2 H1

This means GnuPG will try SHA256, then SHA512, SHA384,
RIPEMD160,
SHA1 and MD5, in that order. As soon as it finds a hash
that the
other person can use, it'll use that one.

SHA256 is currently the most interoperable believed-good
hash, which
is why I use it over SHA512 and SHA384.

Re: changing hash

Hello Robert, Hendrik, John

I found a file called options.skel which looks like a
template for
the gpg.conf file. I copied this file to my gpg.conf file
and included
the line

 personal-hash-preferences H8 H10 H9 H3 H2 H1

Nothing has changed so I still must be missing something
obvious.

This file mentions that a list of options can be found in
the man
pages, unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a manual in
what I
downloaded

Yep. Namely, it's personal-digest-preferences, not
personal-hash-preferences.

Sorry I should have mentioned that I noticed the
personal-digest-preferences mentioned in a file called
gpg.man so I
included the line

personal-digest-preferences H8 H10 H9 H3 H2 H1

in the gpg.conf file. Again nothing seems to have changed.

I generated a new key with the following

type=pub/sec, size=2048/2048, cipher=RSA/RSA

I included the following in the gpg.conf file

personal-digest-preferences H8 H3

When I sign an e-mail the hash still shows up as SHA1.

I do not have personal digest preferences in my gpg.conf but
I do have:
digest-algo SHA256

Works for me.

Btw I do not use WinPT but GPGshell 3.60

So far I like the GPGshell better than WinPT. Although if I
