Hi All
I have been researching how to send my key to a keyserver.
On this
page 'htt
p://www.debian-administration.org/articles/451' I am
told to
run gpg --list-secret-keys to get my key information and to
send this
to a key server using --send-keys.
Is this primary key ID the key ID I need to submit to
keyserver?

Thanks,
Terry

Your keyid is 0xF8F20E85A351EA03. You can make a copy of
your public key
that can be pasted into an email or keyserver submission
form by
entering at the command prompt:
gpg --export -a -o mykey.asc 0xF8F20E85A351EA03
Notes:
- --export Exports a *public* key
- -a Output to be ASCII armored (otherwise, it's binary)
- -o Output to be sent to specified filename (ie,
mykey.asc)

He picked a hex string at random and registered it with the
keyserver
authority as belonging to Terry Munson, of course. Just
kidding.
The key ID is embedded in each signature. That way when
GnuPG sees a
signature, it knows which key to try to use to verify the
signature.

OK. When I look at my keyid it shows A351EA03, but Michael
showed
0xF8F20E85A351EA03 as being my keyid.
According to GnuPG your keyed is FEAF8109. Am I missing
something?

The key ID is really the same as the SHA-1 hash of your
signing key.
So the full id of my key is
CE11CA95FF8AF9F97F8D1D84B700F482FEAF8109
This is simply too long for people to remember, though, so
it's
common for human beings to just read the last eight hexits
("FEAF8109").
Unfortunately, computers really shouldn't keep track of keys
by an 8-
hexit identifier. Once you have 65,536 keys on your keyring
you'll
have a 50/50 chance of two keys having the same last eight
hexits.
(This has everything to do with statistics and nothing to do
with
crypto; look up the Birthday Paradox.)
So if I'm running a keyserver, I want to use at least
sixteen hexits
to describe a key. At that point, I'll need about four
billion keys
before I have a 50/50 chance of two keys sharing the same
last
sixteen hexits.
Internally, GnuPG uses the full forty hexits.
So: "FEAF8109" could refer to many different keys
which end in
'FEAF8109'. "B700F482FEAF8109" probably refers to
just my key. And
"CE11CA95FF8AF9F97F8D1D84B700F482FEAF8109" almost
_definitely_ refers
to just my key.
Hope this helps!

Yes it very much helps. So I did the following to try and
find your
key.
Since the only info I had on your key was keyid FEAF8109 I
used
- --search-key 0XFEAF8109 which listed one key, yours. So I
entered 1
and your key was imported to my key ring. If I understand
you
correctly there was a good chance that when I used
--search-key I
could have found more that one key.
Is there a way to get more keyid info than the last 8
characters of
your keyid? Before your key was on my keyring, or if I try
and verify
Michael's sig, I only see the last 8 characters of the
keyid.
Now that your key is on my key ring I can see your complete
keyid.

This key is the key I used to sign the message. I created
one key for
signing and another for encryption. To download my key to a
keyserver
is use the command --export 0xF8F20E85A351EA03.
Does this just download my signing key, and would I need to
do the
same thing with my encryption key?

Assuming a keyserver is set in gpg.conf,
gpg --send-key 0xF8F20E85A351EA03

This _uploads_ just the signing key. and yes you will need
