| GnuPG: Is my pub key uploaded? |
  United States |
2007-03-05 23:30:02 |
Hello,
I have successfully created the Gpg Key Pair and thought I
had
uploaded the pub key to a keyserver (I followed step-by-step
from
mozdev.org) But as far as I can tell, it is not uploaded (I
tried
extracting on a public keyserver and it was not found) So,
is there a
good way to check this?
So then I was going to upload it directly at the keyserver
site
(originally I did it from my command prompt) but they want
the ASCII
armored version and I don't know how to get that. I only
have the
KeyID (0x--------). Is there a command I can use to get the
ASCII so
I can copy and paste?
As you can see, I am working a little beyond my knowledge
level here,
but I really want to get this working. I've learned a lot
already to
get to this point! btw, I am running XP.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Jody

I'll guess that was the bit at htt
p://enigmail.mozdev.org/gpgconf.html#keyserver
The last bit of that paragraph states:
...random.sks.keyserver.penguin.de has been used which is
special in
the sense that you might not see the result immediately as
this address
sends requests to a random server within its pool and it
may take some
time until your newly uploaded key has been distributed to
the other
servers.
A common error new users make is to upload to a DNS
round-robin address, such
as random.sks.keyserver.penguin.de, pool.sks-keyservers.net,
or subkeys.pgp.net,
then immediately check for the key's presence. A DNS
round-robin is a mechanism
to spread traffic among a number of servers, Instead of a
single server address
each is a collection of addresses; 25 each for random and
pool, 5 for subkeys.
Each time you reference the address, you get one server
from the pool in a
round-robin fashion. Generally speaking, any given
keyserver in the pool that
you update reflects the update immediately, but frequently
people update one
keyserver in the pool, but then check for the update from
another server in the
pool which hasn't gotten it yet.
When you sent your key, you should get a confirmation
message similar to
$ gpg --send-key 0x608d2a10
gpg: sending key 608D2A10 to hkp server minsky.surfnet.nl
<html><body>Key block added to key server
database.
New public keys added: <br>1 keys added
succesfully.<br></html></body>
If so, your key is sent. Just wait for a while for the
servers to synchronize.
If you don't see your key after 24 hours, then you should
resend it.

gpg --export <keyID> > mykey.asc
Replace <keyID> with your keyID, eg 0xdecafbad
BTW, obscuring the keyID doesn't really gain you any
additional security, but it
does get in the way of helping diagnose your problem.

Hi John,
Thanks for the help. I appear to have successfully uploaded
my pub key
0x617480CB. I did not get a confirmation message via the
mozdev
method (they say if you get back to the prompt without a
warning you
have successfully uploaded, but it was nowhere to be found)
so I used
the AscII cut and paste at the MIT Keyserver. Yes!!
