Lists Objectives
<><><><><><><><
><><><>
Mounting privacy and security concerns are now driving many
to seek out
alternative measures that would provide for greater On-line
security. Two
of these measures are Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) from Network
Associates
Inc., and Gnu Privacy Guard (GnuPG) from GNU. The PGP-Basics
Mailing List
was created to provide a forum in which PGP/GPG Users are
encouraged to
ask questions on the installation and use of the Software.
Hopefully, we
will help you to develop an interest in the issues
surrounding computing
security and privacy, as these are concerns we all face.
PGP-Basics
promises to nurture the self-confidence of security &
privacy conscious
individuals by encouraging Members to ask any questions
pertaining to the
use of PGP or GPG, and to discuss any security and privacy
concerns you
may have, without fear of ridicule or "RTFM" type
replies.
We have also compiled a List of Members who are willing to
exchange
encrypted messages with other Members who want the practise.
This List
is mailed out under separate cover upon subscription to
PGP-Basics, and
as a monthly mailing.
PGP-Basics would also like to remind all Members that you
are encouraged
to provide feedback at any time regarding this List and it's
Charter.
Those who prefer may correspond privately to:

LISTS POLICY
<><><><><><><><
>
ATTACHMENTS:
In the interests of all Members, please be advised that
E-Mail attachments
will not be accepted on the PGP-Basics List, but they are
accepted on both
the PGP-Basics-OT and PGP-Basics-Firewalls Lists.
CLEAR-SIGNING MESSAGES:
PGP-Basics encourages each List Member to PGP Clear-Sign
your List
Postings at every opportunity.
ENCRYPTING MESSAGES:
PGP-Basics has set up an Encryption/Decryption Help Group
consisting of
senior PGP-Basics Members who are willing to help new Users
who wish to
exchange encrypted messages. The List of Members is
distributed under
separate cover upon subscription, bi-weekly to the
PGP-Basics List, and
is posted in the Files area of our Web Site:
http:
//groups.yahoo.com/group/PGP-Basics/files/
EXCESSIVE QUOTING:
Although this may fall under the Netiquette guidelines, I do
feel it
happens a lot, and thus deserves a heading of it's own.
Please be kind,
and trim your quoted material to only that which is
pertinent to your
reply.
HTML/RICH TEXT FORMAT:
For the benefit of all Members, PGP-Basics will strictly
adhere to a
Policy of no HTML or Rich Text Formatted (RTF) messages of
any kind.
MEMBERSHIP LIST:
We decided on YahooGroups for our Mailing List not only
because of the
flexibility that YahooGroups offers, and the responsiveness
of their
support team, but more importantly because they take care to
ensure that
addresses cannot be harvested by spammers:
http://gr
oups.yahoo.com/help/members.html#3
PGP-Basics has also taken the extra step of restricting
access to the
Membership List, which is available only to the List Owner.
You can read
the YahooGroups privacy statement at:
http://grou
ps.yahoo.com/info/privacy.html
UNSOLICITED ADVERTISING:
Under no circumstances are Members allowed to use this
Mailing List for
any form of unsolicited advertising, regardless of intent.
It is a matter
of course that the PGP-Basics Lists protect the integrity of
our
Membership Lists.
NETIQUETTE:
The List Moderators will encourage and enforce standard
netiquette,
which I'm sure we are all aware of. May I suggest that we
follow the
principles outlined in the following URL's...
http://www.dtcc.e
du/cs/rfc1855.html
http://www.imaginarylandscape.com/helpweb/mail/polite.
html
http:
//www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html
http://www.fau.edu
/netiquette/net/
NO OFFENSIVE OR FOUL LANGUAGE:
Straightforward List rule, and strictly enforced by the
Moderators. Note
that any profanity expressed, whether directly or implied by
code such
as "what the **** is going on", is expressly
forbidden on this list, and
will be dealt with accordingly.
OFF TOPIC MESSAGES OR THREADS:
In the interest of every List Member, please try and keep
Off-Topic
discussions to a minimum. I know it's difficult at times, as
lengthy
discussions seem to just drift in that direction. During
those
instances, one of the List Moderators may officially
intervene, and
declare the subject closed, after which any further
discussion must be
taken to the PGP-Basics-OT List. We certainly would
appreciate your
assistance in this case. Subscribe to the PGP-Basics OT List
here:
PGP-Basics-OT-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
In cases where the discussion may be going Off-Subject but
still within
the realm of PGP-Basics, Members are encouraged to simply
change the
Subject. In the interest of message threading conventions
however, please
do so by creating a NEW message, with a NEW Subject heading,
instead of
simply replying to an existing message and _then_ changing
the Subject.
RESPECT FOR OTHER MEMBERS:
PGP-Basics has a zero tolerance for any kind of disrespect
or flaming
shown on the List. List Moderators will intervene very
quickly here, and
take whatever measures are necessary to ensure the offending
party
adheres to the List Policy on this matter. Offending Members
will be
notified, and told that if it happens a second time, they
may well have
their names removed from the List Membership.
"RTFM" TYPE REPLIES:
In keeping with the spirit of PGP-Basics, we would ask that
you *NOT* use
the above abbreviation when indicating in your reply that
the answer can
be found in the Manual(s). Rather, we would kindly ask that
you answer the
question _and_ provide the appropriate document and page
where _you_ found
the answer. We feel that this policy would entice New Users
to acquaint
themselves with the PGP Manuals, and ultimately lead to
their greater
understanding of PGP. Your cooperation is greatly
appreciated.
PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT BY YOUR VERY SUBSCRIPTION OR POSTING
TO
PGP-BASICS, YOU ARE AGREEING TO ABIDE BY THE GUIDELINES
LISTED ABOVE,
AND FAILURE TO DO SO, MAY RESULT IN SUSPENSION OF POSTING
PRIVILEGES.
