How can you use HTML to Produce background pictures for Subject topics from Mysql

im putting together a forum in which has dates and comments.
the way im
trying to make it look on screen in html is that each record
has one
line all the way across the screen but i need the dates to
be written
in ex: white with a blue background and then the comments to
be written
in Black with a white or light background im trying to make
it the same
as gumtree check it out

can anyone think of the best way to do this which programs
to use even

class the dates as dates and then the comments as comments i
can
rewrite the coding easily i just need to know how to mix the
images
with the records thanks
