I would really like to know what the difference is between
mysql and mysqli and why I should use/redevelop for one or
the other. Can I use mysql.* with MySQL5? What do I lose?

I really, really, really don't think it makes sense to force
all PHP+MySQL to redevelop. That's what certain other
paradigms, which I deliberately avoid, like to do to people.
