The sharks got lunch. :-(

After issuing a print job, 'lpq -a' or 'lpstat -t' reported
the printer was not
responding, so the queue would retry in 30 seconds.
Accordingly, I power
cycled the printer, an HP Deskjet 5940 while doing a 'tail
-f
/var/log/messages'. Immediately after I powered off the
printer, a USB
disconnect message appeared. About 15 seconds later,
xclock's second hand quit
moving, and the kernel would not answer pings from another
machine on the LAN.
Here's a piece from /var/log/messages:

Apr 29 14:01:01 one msec: set variable SystemMenu to true
in
/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf
Apr 29 14:30:54 one kernel: usb 3-2: USB disconnect, address
3
Apr 29 14:37:47 one syslogd 1.4.1: restart.

Earlier in the day, there was a report of a dma timer expiry
on one of the two
hard disks:

Apr 29 08:01:01 one msec: set variable SystemMenu to true
in
/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf
Apr 29 08:37:05 one kernel: hde: dma_timer_expiry: dma
status == 0x20
Apr 29 08:37:05 one kernel: hde: DMA timeout retry
Apr 29 08:37:05 one kernel: PDC202XX: Primary channel
reset.
Apr 29 08:37:05 one kernel: hde: timeout waiting for DMA
Apr 29 08:37:05 one kernel: hde: status timeout: status=0xd0

Apr 29 08:37:05 one kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Apr 29 08:37:05 one kernel: PDC202XX: Primary channel
reset.
Apr 29 08:37:05 one kernel: hde: drive not ready for
command
Apr 29 08:37:06 one kernel: ide2: reset: success
Apr 29 08:40:11 one crontab[14061]: (root) LIST (root)

Hardware is an Iwill P4ES motherboard with an Intel 845E
chipset and ECC RAM.
RAM has passed overnight testing fairly recently. USB
devices include an HP
ScanJet 6300C scanner, the HP Deskjet 5940 printer, and a
Brother HL-5140
printer. Hard disks are hde and hdg, because that is a
faster controller. CD
burner and reader are hda and hdc.

I guess I'll see whether kernel 2.6.17-11mdv will again hit
41 days of uptime.

description:
The kernel suffered an oops while handling a USB scanner or
printer. It may have been while I power cycled the printer
to awaken it or its queue.

For reference purposes, this system and its peripherals had
41 days of continuous uptime with kernel 2.6.17-11mdv.
However, since the X updates and kernel update on about
April 7, I have seen more X client crashes (Firefox in
particular), along with two kernel deaths that appeared to
be connected with USB printer or scanner issues. (This is
the second strike for the -13mdv kernel. If it gets one
more strike, I plan to feed it to the sharks and go back to
the -11mdv kernel.)
