Hi,

Looks like open source competition is forcing a lot of vendors to chnage their business model.

Icefaces- the AJAX JSF implementation which has been out for 2 yrs has open sourced their code base.Looks like Dojo and Eclipse AJT is forcing businesses to change their business model.

It is great for an end-user but I wonder how the smaller companies like icefaces and JetBrains(IDEA) will survive under this onslaught of the Goliath(Eclipse powered by IBM).

Ice Faces was one of the first (the first?) companies to do "Ajax" style components (before Ajax was called Ajax).  I've been very impressed for the last couple JavaONE's with what they have had to present.  I have spoken to them a couple times about adding support for their components to JSFTemplating... now that they're open source (as of today), I might move forward w/ that more quickly (perhaps this weekend...).  And *that's* the power of Open Source... it opens doors that otherwise would be closed.

Dojo is an open source project sponsored by a very small company based in S.F.  I've had a chance to personally speak with Alex Russell... very down to earth, great guy.  While I think their work is significant (one of, if not the best Ajax framework out there), I don't know that they are single-handedly forcing anyone to be open source.

Anyway, the easiest way to use some of the Dojo widgets (and other Ajax vendor widgets) is via Greg Murray's jMaki project (https://ajax.dev.java.net).  This project is gaining a lot of traction and is now (I think it's announced) available even for PHP in addition to JSF and JSP.  The "Gallery" section of the project is a must see.

I think the short answer is: Services and Support.

And for the record... most of the big companies were drug kicking and screaming into the open source movement.  It was the "little guy" that started the whole thing.  It's now a standard business practice and companies big and small are having to adapt (some monopolies excluded... but their clock is ticking).

Anyway, that's just 2 more cents from me... ; ;)
