Hi all:

A while back I participated in a lengthy set of exchanges
over the way
mail on this list is formatted. I and many others were
getting messages
with a graphic sidebar. When trying to reply to them with
the standard
tools in email applications like Thunderbird, it was
difficult to edit
or quote the original messages. I gave a workaround and
somebody (I
think it was Theo) pointed out that there was a link on the
messages
that could be used to turn off the fancy stuff. As the
exchanges ended,
it appeared that you could indeed get back to plain
messages, but that
you had to be registered with Yahoo to do so, and I really
didn't want
to do that.

As it turns out, you don't have to be. (Unfortunately from
here I'm
going to be a bit vague because I no longer get mail in that
format and
I don't remember what the specific links were.) On the fancy
messages,
there's a link at the bottom for switching to the plain-Jane
format. I
think it's called "traditional" format or
something like that. Clicking
that link opens a new preaddressed message with the subject
filled in
ready to be sent to Yahoo. The subject says you want
traditional format.
If you send that message, Yahoo will eventually send you an
email asking
you to confirm the change. Once they receive your reply,
they will make
the change. You don't need an account with them to do it.
