Hi All,
Last December I posted an OT request for help with DVD sound
track
dubbing and received some excellent assistance from several
of you
including Billy Horton. This was in conjunction with a
Fighter/Recce
Pilots reunion I am hosting in late April.
With that introduction, I have got a new DVD with new
soundtrack. Now
to produce the DVD label. I am using the CD Stomper 866 two
labels/sheet with the upper label on the left on the lower
on the
right. I got some Sure Thing software with the label
package. Tried
that for two hours and gave it up; junk IMO.
What to do? I decided to scan the label sheet overlaid with
two dvd
blanks to give me a start point using PgS. I scanned the
circular logo
for the labels too. Imported the label sheet and then the
logo. Then I
superimposed the logo over the blank labels on the sheet.
With about an
hour of trial and adjustment of the logo overall size, then
height &
width & placement in the final stages in 1-2 mm
increments, got a
perfect printout.
Perhaps another unorthodox use of PgS. What a magnificent
program.
Anyone who might want the the Stomper label sheet and my dvd
labels to
experiment with, please let me know privately and I'll be
happy to send
same. In closing, I believe the technique described can be
applied to
any CD/DVD label sheet of any size.
Done with PgS Windows 5.3.0.4 Pro.
Thanks once again, Deron
Harry

I've been using PageStream for CD and DVD labels for several
years. I
have to use a printer X-offset of 2 on both my Canon inkjet
and my
Brother laser printers. I use Fellows labels.

David,
I guess I should have put in a foreword to my email. I too
have done
CD/DVD labels in the past on a Canon Inkjet using PgS. And
now with the
Epson 1280. I had not seen nor do remember a post to ML
detailing info
on techniques and procedures. Thus my reason for the
current post.

David,
With your experience, do you have a recommendation for a
high-or-semi-gloss CD label? Reason I ask is that some CD
labels are so
thick that the CD/DVD may cause disruption and damage to
both the CD/DVD
and a carousel player like the Sony 400? I imagine it's a
cut and try.
So far the Stomper labels have given no trouble.
I don't do this kind of work professionally, just for
special projects
for family and friends.

Fellows (Neato) labels, matte or glossy, have never caused
problems for
me. Another brand, Avery, which has self-centering labels,
has caused
problems because they don't center as accurately. The Neato
labels
require a centering tool that comes with the starter kit.

For those who may be interested, I have a template for
printing directly
on CDs and DVDs with the Epson 300 series of printers. The
software
Epson supplies is workable for the purpose, but PageStream
is more
elegant and familiar. If anyone's interested, I'd be happy
to send it along.
Note that other Epson printers with the print-on-CD
capability format
the page differently, so this template won't work with them.
But you
could probably use it as a starting point.

I have had success with both Neato and Avery. Neato is a
better deal
since Avery has two labels per sheet which can be a waste.
Neato also
has transparent labels which I have used a little.
Note that all of these labeling systems can cause problems
in the long
run. People have reported problems with them causing
problems in some
equipment that's sensitive to the thickness of the media.
There have
also been problems with paper labels distorting the flatness
of the
discs under certain weather and humidity conditions that
cause the label
to shrink a bit. And there are supposed issues with labels
throwing the
discs off balance and making them less reliable. I've never
had these
problems myself, but they have been reported.

Has anyone on the list used PGS with one of the Canon or HP
models that
print directly onto 'printable' CDs or DVDs?

There are also reports that the glue used slowly degrades
the CD/DVD. Most
computer professionals that I have heard of do not use paper
labels for
archival purposes.

Sounds neat. Could you send it my way please? TIA
