I like what I can accomplish with PageStream, but on my
Windows XP system
PGS is very unstable. It can crash time after time when all
I'm doing is
trying to page through a document or print it.

I have two versions installed at the moment: 5.0.1.37 and
5.0.3.4.
Sometimes when one version keeps crashing I can switch to
the other and
the very same document and task will work.

At present I have 1.5 GB of memory. Would doubling the
memory reduce the
tendency to crash? Would PageStream professional be more
stable?

I'm using the non-pro version of PgS 5.0.3.4 on WinXP Pro
with only
512 Mbyte of memory and as far as I can remember I have had
few
crashes if any while using PgS. You must have some other
process
interfering with PgS causing the crash!?! As what it is, I
can't begin
to guess!

More memory might help, but you would probably need to see
what's
running on your system in the background that may be
conflicting with PgS.

Sorry, I couldn't help anymore!

Tom,

I am running PgS 5.0.3.4 Pro and two prior versions on XP
with two G
RAM, about 1.8 usable after all the XP garbage sucks up the
rest. No
crashes here except in very unusual circumstances and
depending on what
you are trying to do. I think the latter is the key, which
you need to
describe.

I don't think it will help, Tom.

Do you have large documents with lots of bitmaps / drawings?
And do you
have more of them open at one time?
Because... PGS will crash after it reaches the an amount of
memory,
always the same memory-size.

If this isn't the case: please notice what you did, so can
it be done
over and over again with the same result.
Only this way Deron, and Dan, can figure out what goes
wrong.

Sometimes a redo or an undo can crash PGS (and beware: most
of the time
it hasn't this behavior!). But we are / I am not able to
tell at what
time and what we did exactly.
The table-tool can also be a problem, and rather fast. But
it acts
always differently (so we / I think!).
If you have followed this PageStreamSupport some time, you
should know
about most of them already.

For the time being: do save regular, so the crash isn't that
harsh.

I'm using 5.0.2.10 Pro which as far as I know is the most
recent
non-beta released. I'm running it on a Dell laptop with 512
MB RAM and
Windows XP Home SP2.

As far as I know the most recent non-Pro version is 5.0.2.10
as well, so
I would recommend that you upgrade 5.0.1.37 and stop using a
beta version.

5.0.2.10 Pro works here without any problems. I do, however,
have to
admit that I only create small and probably simple
documents. An more
... intensive ... use of PGS might not work as well. I don't
know since
I only create simple documents.

A couple of years ago I experienced that using tables with
PGS almost
every time caused crashes. I don't know if 5.0.2.10 has this
problem too.

Sounds like it could be a hardware problem. Have you run a
memory
check on your system?? Is PGS the only app to cause the
crash??
If you have another program that can stess your system (a
game would
be good) in the same manner that PGS does?? Does it crash
teh system
as well? IF so this might be a hardware problem.
Try memtest at http://www.memtest86.com/
look for the free downloads on the left, dl and burn the iso
(make
sure you burn the iso correctly) and use this cd to boot
your system
with, memtest can check your memory in your system.
next up might be your power supply, if you've added onto
your system
, drives, graphic card, sound card, beyond the spes of the
original
power supply this would be the next thing to look into.

As others have mentioned more memory isn't going to help.
Sad to say
PageStream isn't perfectly stable so some operations can be
a little
dangerous. Although I rarely have any trouble with Undo
myself that seems to
be mostly due to the types of operations I try to undo (or
rather, what I
don't try to undo). Some table operations lead to
instability (and
unfortunately appear to do so in a non-obvious way so Deron
has been unable
to fix this so far).

More specifics as to tasks might help. Also, it will help
any trouble shooting
if you have as few other things running as possible,
including programs that
only appear in the system tray. It is always possible that
there is something
else on the system causing random crashes.
