Numbers in parentheses refer to questions in message I am
responding to.

(1) It appears that memtest86 is for Linux only. I
downloaded versions 3.2
and 3.3. The installation instructions in the readme for
both versions is
for Linux (talks about Makefile and Lilo).

(2) PageStream is the only program with frequent crashes,
which has been
the case since I purchased it in March 2005. (4) The Dell
4700 system is
as delivered except that I increased the memory from .5 MB
to 1.5 MB
hoping to improve PageStream stability. PageStream crashed
before I made
that change as well as after. And it is not just one
document or one
operation that causes the crashes.

Crashes occur even when PGS is the only application
running--antivirus and
firewall being shutdown. (3) At various times I run paradox
9 database,
WordPerfect 12, PaintShop Pro 9 and XI, and three Web
browsers, among
other applications, none of which crash. (3) I even run
Microsoft Train
Simulator with no problem, and that certainly stresses the
system.

Here are specifics for one current problem using PGS
5.0.3.4: sending a
one-page, legal size document with five small JPG images to
my Lexmark Z22
color inkjet causes PageStream to close. I have saved the
report Windows
would have sent to Microsoft, in case it would be useful.
The driver for
this printer is the latest available for XP. The failure is
solid and also
occurs with PGS 5.0.1.37. However, if I save the page as a
PDF, that will
print on this printer.

The same PGS file (30.5 MB) will print on my Brother HL-1440
laser
printer. But the page prints in negative if fast print setup
is selected.
With fast print checked, the laser printer prints in
negative; with fast
print cleared, it prints correctly. I thought I had cleared
up this
negative printing problem last autumn when I first
downloaded
Windows.prt.1.0c.zip. Since then I have uninstalled and
reinstalled the
two versions of PGS that I have referred to and have again
downloaded and
installed the Windows.prt.1.0c.zip printer driver, after
verifying the MD5
checksum.

Not correct.
On the same website you can download an ISO image. Burn it
on a CD and boot from it.
Or get the version called "installable from
Windows/DOS". You can write it onto a floppy disk, you
will then boot from.

memtest86 is not for any platform: it runs independently.
You download and
burn the provided ISO image to a cd and boot from that cd
(or boot floppy
image to a floppy disk and boot from that disk). That's it.
You do need
software that can burn an ISO image.

All of which would tend to indicate a problem with
PageStream, yes.

Disclaimer: I do not write windows print drivers, nor am I
an expert in them.
This suggests to me a fault with the print driver. It may
well be the case
that PageStream exposes a bug that other applications do not
because they do
not need/use/exercise the same print features that
PageStream does.

This supports the suggestion that it may be a bug in the
printer driver
exposed by PageStream (the fast print is known to have
issues and reports of
problems with it are welcome).

At the least the fact that you can:

1) reliably crash PgS printing this document to the Lexmark
Z22
2) reliably print the same document from PgS to the Brother
HL-1440

indicates that there is not a fundamental flaw in
PageStream's print system.
If it were you would be unable to print the document in
question at all.

An alternative to the "PageStream exposes a bug in the
Lexmark driver" theory
is that the "Lexmark driver exposes a bug in
PageStream". While I would lean
to the former I can in no way rule out the latter at this
time. In either
case the truly pertinent things are:

1) the document in question
2) the printer driver
3) the version of Windows (print system)
4) the version of PageStream

If I had that model of Lexmark printer (I do not) and the
same version of
Windows as you (my work laptop runs WinXP which might or
might not have the
same patches as yours) then by adjusting document contents I
might possibly
be able to help isolate what is causing the problem.

However, given that I don't the best bet is to try the
isolation on your own
and provide the document to Dan and Deron. While they may
not have a Lexmark
Z22 either, Deron is much more familiar with print systems
than I am and may
be able to determine what is causing the problem.

...snip...

I did look at my (?) problem some months ago with PGS
5.0.3.4.
I had a faulted font, and each time a new page was loaded
PGS asked for
that font again.
So the memory usage was fast filled. At about usage of 60 -
70 MByte,
PGS crashes.
 From my earlier e-mail:
Memory use starts from about 300 MB (no PGS is
running) to 360
MB out of 2459 MB, and then PGS crashes, according to
Windows Task
Management.
I did that trick again after the problem with the font was
gone. I
opened as many documents till it reached that 60 - 70 MB
again... and
PGS disappeared!

I am guessing your crashing has something to do with memory
using,
although the other printer doesn't have that problem.

Why don't you use the latest PGS version? If there are
problems with
your version, you can at least try the latest beta. You put
the other
version in another map, and start from there (so your older
version is
still there, in this way, to use!).

And I am wondering: you are using Windows.prt.1.0c.zip! This
is for the
latest beta version, and might not work correct with PGS
5.0.1.37.

Happy hunting,

Theo
