When you choose "Save as PDF", you should get
several options to
compress or not compress the "page" data and the
"bitmap" data. The
most recent versions will disable the popup if the
compression modules
are not found, but the should be in every distribution. They
are found
in SoftLogik/Special/ and are named something like Ascii85,
AsciiHEX,
Flate (which is the compressor that reduces the size the
most).

It shouldn't. PDF-Xchange has numerous settings that allow
you to vary
the compression schemes used and adjust dpi and the
like---at least the
"Pro" version does. You should be able to get
relatively small files out
of it which would be quite acceptable. On the other hand,
PDF-Xchange
doesn't understand the PageStream format and, therefore,
changes almost
everything including fonts, to bitmaps. Any bitmaps within
the file are
separated out and exist independently including any portions
you've
cropped within PageStream. Pretty much everything else is a
separate
bitmap. So dpi is an important setting.
