For what it is worth, Don!
Only the PGS-document size on your disk is smaller with
external
pictures (still: it keeps a smaller bitmap-file inside the
PGS-document:
FPO - For Position Only -Fine / Medium / Coarse or Custom).
The size on your harddisk is not smaller (PGS-file plus the
FPO-picture
plus the pictures on the harddisk are still there), in
effect it uses
more space!
Every picture you 'see' in PGS adds to the used size of the
memory. And
as Tim already said: compressed bitmaps are using more
memory than you
see on your harddisk.
So external pictures (drawings and bitmaps) is a way of
exploring in
advance what you want with it:
* you can change the picture easily, the updated picture is
incorporated
into PGS (when you open the document again);
* you want to use the same picture in another document (or
again in the
same document).
Maybe there are more, but I can't think of any more at the
moment.
Maybe you better leave the pictures inside of the document
if you
haven't got any idea of the use of external pictures. in
this way you
cannot accidentally delete the picture, and cannot find the
picture
anymore when the document is opened!
