Yep. In essentially the same way as GIF (by designating a color as being
transparent) IIRC.

The lack of support for other types of raster images is not an inherent
limitation of PgS, it is a limitation of the filters used by PgS. If there
were enough demand that it outweighed all other priorities I'm sure Deron
would remedy the matter. As it stands any enterprising programmer could write
a filter that does (the necessary information is available). Unfortunately
there's been no one else with the skill, time and interest to take that on
either.
