I'm sorry, but I have to get it away from my mind.
The situation you described is unbelievable for me.
I live in Germany and these are problems that I thought only
to find in Sri Lanka or anywhere else.
But not on your continent .

It all depends on where you live. Some parts of the US are
still very under
developed (which is good for the folks who like it that
way), but for the
vast majority of the population such problems are virtually
unheard of
(although, a few years ago, in the small midwestern town I
live in we were
completely without power for three days -- substation
completely combusted
and due to the power grid structure took out all of town).

Tim,
What loverly timing. I live in Reston, VA about 12 miles NW of the
Idiot Capital of the World (aka Washington, DC). About 1600 today, we
had a massive Thunderbumper which knocked down our power, very local
mind you, for 3.5 hours. We have lots of trees which happen to fall
down on overhead power lines. Try to cut these hazards down and the
Green Eco-Nuts scream and hire lawyers to sue , just even the thought
of touching a TREE.
Well some years back, I got tired of all this bull-s#t and installed a
semi-automatic generator (10kw with 12kw surge) It was necessary
because my wife had gone serious melanoma surgery and we could not
tolerate power outages.
Cost for the generator and the auto cutoff to prevent power feedback
into the outside electric grid was $US 3500. It works. It will run the
whole house except for Air Conditioning, the heavy 220V current stuff,
but will run run the heating system in the winter.

Ouch. Although having the generator does help keep you from being so dependent
on the grid.
After the 3 days of no power I wanted to get a generator but my wife said no.
We lost power again for a few days this last winter due to the ice storm. The
power problems were primarily caused by trees not having been trimmed away
from the power lines (city had been very lax for a long time). Actually, I
was out of town on a trip when the storm hit so my wife endured it alone. Not
happy.
Although I'm still without a generator I will note that the city has started
enforcing the ordinance...

I bought a fully automatic one in January that runs on natural gas. It
has its own breaker box and will run most of my circuits. It won't
handle the air conditioner or the electric stove, but most of the rest
including my pump station (grinder pump for sewage). It starts itself
every Saturday noon and runs for 20 minutes to insure that the oil stays
up in it and that it will start when it's needed.
The peace of mind is wonderful.

It also saves a lot on replacing on the food in the refrigerator(s).
Before the the generator, we lost power and toss out about $400 worth of
spoiled food.

I'm not heating or cooling a small home. We have 3600 sq feet to heat
and cool on three levels to include 12 pitch cathedral ceilings, a town
home. Tain't easy because there is a bunch of cubic feet.
I'm not exactly young, just turned 77. So heating and cooling basics
become essential.

Here in Virginia, a fully auto system, natural gas generated installed
costs about $12K installed. I'm thinking about it, for my precious
wife, and myself.

South Dakota has an AVERAGE population density of 9.9 people per square mile.
North Dakota is only 9.3, and roughly 43% of that population is
concentrated in 2 cities.
There is a LOT of empty space in parts of the U.S.A.!

You don`t have to heat/cool nearly as much if it is well insulated. One
off outlay instead of repeated.
