Lines that cross one another do not constitute an object. That is, four
lines that make a square by crossing one another at the corners are not
a fillable object. If you want to fill the square, you'll have to
actually connect the lines. The easiest way is probably to create the
square with the pen tool, completing the object by ending back at the
starting point. Otherwise, you'll need to join the paths of the lines,
which can be tricky.
