I've done some little bits of service on a mid-sized (50m diameter)
propeller turbine, perched on a forested hill, quite far inland and its
starting threshold is set near that velocity. It will run on much weaker
winds, but then, from standstill, it does a powered start, which,
I suppose, is considered not worth it, given the way wind
strength fluctuates.

I'll wager a guess that Deron doesn't quite need the 1MW output
that particular station potentially delivers -- a smaller turbine
will cut in at around 4.5mph.

( That said; were he hooked up to the grid, he /could/
make money off any surplus energy from a larger turbine...

Eager to se those pictures, Deron.

1MW? I could use it. I would setup a small power grid here Problem
is I would then need some massive battery banks or a large diesel
powered plant to fill in the gaps when the wind doesn't blow. Yes, even
here it is calm some days.

Not much power in a 5mph breeze. You need some pretty large blades to
harness that kind of low power. Good thing we average 12mph or better here!

Your eager to see the pictures? I'm eager to have something to take a
picture of! Today (again) the wind is howling, and I'm burning gas to
power everything. A 10ft blade should be making 1kw easy right now...

The wind mill I plan on building is something between this one:

http://www.otherpower.com/bigmills1.html (14ft diameter)

and this one:

http://www.otherpower.com/17page1.html (17ft diameter)
