Come on, Don. The answer is very simple.

Because it looks good, is fine for every customer, and for
multi-channel products it is the standard today.
Only printing is for me like last century. Not only for
me...

So again: Is it possible to create links inside the pdf to
webpages?

Come on, Peter, PageStream is a desktop publishing tool, not
an HTML
editor. Desktop publishing produces printed material. If you
want an
HTML editor, buy one.

All-in-ones are never as good as stand-alones. When you try
to make one
tool do everything, each thing it does tends to interfere
with
everything else it does.

There is nothing wrong with linking to a web page from a
PDF. PageStream
supports export to PDF making this a natural request.

*Because* PgS is a DTP program it is particularly suited to
making PDFs (as
opposed to generating HTML which is a poor fit). There are
many capabilities
of the PDF format that are not available from PgS that are
natural fits for
it. For example, (PDF) bookmarks derived from the chapter
layout or article
threads (seeing as PgS already *has* the concept of an
article).

I recently put together a PDF for work as a replacement for
using Blackboard
to presnt the content of course (which I hope you never have
the displeasure
of working with). The original course material included
links to other
resources. It is not appropriate, nor is it possible, to
include all of these
resources in the course material itself. It would definitely
have been
helpful to be able to insert web links in the relevant
places. In fact,
having the chapter layout would be a boon for that document
and even more so
for my Opus which currently spans five documents and weighs
in at around
1,000 pages. In fact, the PDF support for bundling separate
documents into a
single object with cross linking comes to mind...

Including clip art and other graphics? Which version of
PageStream are
you using? Graphics all come out the wrong sizes and in the
wrong places
in pdfs I try to make from PageStream up through 5.0.3.4
beta. Not to
mention masks.

I use 5.0.3.4 -- but I thought I mentioned higher up about
these bugs. Or was
that one of the emails that yahoo kept bouncing? There are
known problems
with the PDF export. I think I've filed bugs on them. Maybe
I'll check
tomorrow.

It's a portable document, yes. Exclusively for printing?
Absolutely not.

This reminds me of the argument that raged years ago on the
list about
whether we should have a PDF option at all. It took a long
time, but
Deron finally settled it, and we have the tool we have now,
however
problematic it may be just now.

PDF's give you more control over layout when sending on the internet -
this means you can format pages to fit a printed page. when you do a html
version of a page the way the page prints out on the recipient's end is
influenced by the system the recipient has, the browser, the printer. the
resolution of their monitor, etc. Html publishing in terms of
forcing layout is impossible. PDF is portable document format and that
is what it is designed for - to assure that the document received
and viewed looks pretty much as the author/editor intended it to
look across many system variables.

post script - which is related to pdf - in intended mostly just for
printing.

I've never found a way to have _any_ control over a .pdf layout.

The .pdf files that I've tried to make from PageStream including v
5.0.3.4 look nothing like the PageStream files from which I try to make
them. Graphics are all screwed up--misplaced, wrongly sized and
sometimes only partially displayed or printed.

I print out from PageStream on a printer and scan the output as a .jpg
for email attachments or for incorporation into web pages. I can convert
the .jpg to a .pdf graphic with Irfanview or another graphics manipulator.

I have absolutely no problems making PDF files from PGS. They look just
like I want them to.

There is of course a few minor problems as mentioned in these last
couple of days, e.g. no arrows.

I am using the lastest non-beta, PGS 5.0.2.10
