Greetings All,
I'm using PageStream 4.1.5.6 with an AmigaOne, but guess that the questions to
follow would apply to all versions and platforms.
If a document is open and the text cursor is active and sitting in a text frame,
then, in the Edit Palette, if the 'C' button is active (Characters), then one
of the 10 boxes labelled
P *B* /I/ _U_ O ....
NOTE: DAMN! *B* should be B in boldface, /I/ should be I in italic,
_U_ should be U underlined, and O refers to O as outlined.
is active. Most of the time it is 'P' for "Plain text" I think. The trouble is
that it is hard to 'see' that 'P' is the active option because the colours in
my Edit Palette are all various blah shades of grey. Once upon a time I had an
Edit Palette that was much more readable. The same applies to my Toolbar and
Toolbox displays which are breathtakingly dull.
Is there some magic location where one can go and adjust how the colours on the
PageStream screen will appear?
Second, in
File -> System Preferences... -> Screen...
the setting is
Mode = Radeon 9000:1280x1024 32 bit ARG
which is the highest screen resolution that my monitor can handle. But in
"Display DPI" one finds
Display DPI X 65 Y 55
which is the default (I guess). I've fiddled with other values but wonder where
I would find the "best" settings for my Samsung SyncMaster 191r (19" job). I
imagine it is in manual somewhere -- and I have a manual for it -- but what
would the topical heading be? Display DPI !?!?!?!?
One more question!
Recently I discovered how to set up my Toolbox so that it is displayed
horizontally and immediately below the Toolbar. GREAT! But the Edit Palette
always appears at the bottom of the screen, and I have to lift it manually to
set it just underneath the Toolbar. Can one control the location and
orientation at which the Edit Palette appears? Having it near the top of the
screen has made it much simpler to access -- for me.
Thanks for any replies.
Cheers Don (Green Dragon)

No, I think not.
Maybe a better monitor? Withdrawn at once when I saw what you have .
Okay: come and sit closer to the monitor.

This Display DPI is for references for Actual Size.
If you want to see for instance compact disc at the real size on your
monitor, you can fiddle the Display DPI to do this. If you have done
that all the document shown at Actual Size will be shown at the real
size. See also: http://www.pagestream.org/showdocs.php?id=856
But that doesn't help you to see the differences if it is a P (yes:
plain) or not.
Your old monitor didn't have this 1280x1024 size, I presume. So all the
palettes looked bigger then.
I am now wearing glasses .
Maybe Deron should make that in a preferences also, when I am buying a
QSXGA monitor (2560x2048) before I'm buying a magnifying glass also.

Did you try:
Menu Window/Remember Window Positions after you placed all the windows
where they should be?

Theo has already addressed these, but I wanted to point out...

I don't know about the Amiga version because it has been so long since I used
it. But I do see that here the buttons are visibly depressed when active
(like push buttons) and it is no problem to see their state.
My recollection is that Amiga used four (or was it eight?) specific colors for
all interfaces. As time went on and more colors became available this was
still a limitation: there were more colors, but still only so many pens. This
was an issue because an application requested a color and was returned a pen
that might or might not accurately represent the requested color.
Although I realize your Amiga One is going to be using 24 bit color,
PageStream is an "old" Amiga application and is most likely using colors
whose "pens" correspond to those special interface pens of old. If in the new
Amiga those pen requests are not given nice interface colors (e.g., white,
black, light shadow and dark shadow) it would be hard to see the state of a
button.
I really have no idea how the Amiga One deals with this situation, but my
thought would be to check the color palette and see how things look. Do they
provide a way to specify what colors are given an application
requesting "pens" as would be the case for many older Amiga programs like
PageStream?

In other words; you have a ghosted, low contrast colour scheme
defined for inactive windows or gadgets? Is this the case for all screens,
or only the Pagestream one? I haven't got AOS4, but I do have VisualPrefs,
whose author is the man behind much of the OS4 GUI work, so if things are
similar, as I guess, you should only need to use the system GUI prefs,
to alter the pen settings for the screen in question (or system wide,
if that is necessary - as I said, I know little about OS4).

Sombody will no doubt correct me if I am wrong, but it should simply
be a question of measuring the width and height, in inches, of the physical
screen area, covered by graphics and divide the grahics X and Y resolution,
respectively, by these measurements.
