I had unzipped the entire Folder to my desktop and experienced the crash
issue. By moving the folder and all files to my root c drive, it went away.

Hi,
I did as you suggested and it worked. I played a little bit around and
found out, that pagestream works on many plaes and drives, but crashes,
if the path to the PageStream5.0.4.3/pro/demo-folder
is longer than 'D:DiversePagestream-downloadsPageStre' (40 letters).
No-one but Deron is able to produce such behavior!

Speaking just for myself, placing PageStream in the root directory is
unacceptable, and I won't bother with this build if that's the only
solution*. In your experimentation, can you reduce the length of that
path? Are all those subfolders necessary? Can folder names be changed?
Can it be something like "x:ProgramsPageStream_5_04_3"? Or did much of
the path get hardcoded somewhere?

Hello,
I must say, I never tried to do this I'll give it a go later today.
Thanks for the report. Once I get a few things ironed out with the Linux
release (I got it compiled last night but it crashed on exit. Think I
have that fixed, but then I noticed that python is not loading on any of
the releases...) I'll upload that. Hopefully today, but we know how that
goes around here...
I'll try and address any serious issues in a quick release. I would like
to get this core code back to a non-beta. This code is the combination
of all platforms so has had some serious changes. I still have a few
bits and pieces to go, but this is most of it.
Isn't this great fun!!

Thanks Frank for narrowing it down further! This may point to one of
those things that has bothered me for a long time but never took the
time to fix it because of how much work is involved! While I hate to
leave internal bits in a poor state, sometimes the work/rewards ratio is
to far out of line to garner my attention. Nothing like spending a week
fixing something no one knew was broken, and in the process break
something that worked.
Anyway, thanks again.

As I understand it, the problem is having the folder on your desktop
(which resolves to a really long path would be my guess from Frank's
testing).
The other question I have is did folkd run the previous release from the
desktop like this? I can't recall any changes to this area of the code...

I would wait until the next beta then if you are looking for (near?)
full functionality.

Henry:
As I tried to explain: The path must be shorter than 40 caracters. It
does not matter which path it is.

I do not normally install to and run from the desktop. I did it on the
recent release because I just couldn't wait! I just moved 5.034Pro to
the desktop and it runs fine and 5043 crashes from the same location.

Yeah, probably so. I didn't think about it, but at the minimum you have
something like "C:Documents and SettingsdefaultDesktop" plus all the
rest. I've not seen a release with all those folders in Frank's example
leading up to the PageStream folder, but I took it as real.
> The other question I have is did folkd run the previous release from the

Again, that did seem like an odd approach. Normally, you'd just put a
shortcut on the desktop. But I believe he wasn't the only one who had
the problem. With a 40-character threshold, it wouldn't be too hard to
locate the file somewhere in the directory tree where this problem could
arise.
I hate to say it, but not having an installer leaves you open to the
occasional oddball situation. A lot of us on Windows are unaccustomed to
monkeying with the innards and, when we do, we sometimes doing things
in, let's say, "an unconventional manner." I only bring it up because I
was thinking last night that if PageStream does end up with an installer
again in the future, that it should let you check for things like user
preference files and the default directories and ask if you want those
settings (or files) copied or moved from an old install to the new. I
have to admit that I often end up rebuilding all my preference setups
manually after a new install. (They always end up different.) In my own
case I don't keep anything in the PageStream folders except for some
templates. It's all in "My Documents." I just have a shortcut in "My
Documents" that takes me to an ancient version of PageStream where the
templates are. It works for me because there have been times when I've
needed multiple versions of PageStream to deal with anomalous documents
that don't look quite right in later versions of the program. I do seem
to be the only person with that particular issue, so I haven't put it
forward as a bug. There are only a small handful of documents that are
problems anyway. It's not worth it to me to adjust them to work with
later versions, so I just revert to the last version of PageStream that
displayed them as intended.
