Hi Ernest and everyone.

I began with removing the #?.pfb files and altering my prefs to match
yours, to no avail.

Then I started looking more at the fonts as you suggested. I was using
the fonts provided with PageStream4, but noticed in the font selector
that there was 3 duplicates of many fonts in the list, i.e. Triumvirate -
Normal (the standard sans-serif font I use), was listed three times.

Turns out that in the font prefs list, I had included the drawer
Fonts:_bullet_oulines for some unknown reason.
To cut a long story short, I removed that and now I see only one of each
font in the font list, as expected, and the intermittent subscript
spacing problem seems to be cured!

What a relief that is, many thanks for everyone's help and suggestions,
particularly Ernest. It's great to know there are many such
knowledgeable PageStream users willing to offer much friendly advice.

Last silly question of the day:
Is there a British language dictionary available for PageStream4?
We use British English in New Zealand, so it would be a little nicer if
I could spellcheck using the correct dictionary, though the current
American English one I'm using generally does the job.

Regards,
Anthony.

I admit I didn't actually try and duplicate your problem

Yes, _bullet_outlines -- that's one I didn't think of. Good show. Those
will not be the same font design. Causes me to wonder how well the opposite
would work -- substituting the pagestream intellifonts for those that
came with the OS. I suspect some of the character positions might not match.

It's probably still a good idea to eliminate the #?.pfb files so they
will be renewed as there may be some faulty #?.pfb encoding owing to
the presence of the system intellifonts.

Can't help you as I haven't actually looked for that one. Check the
Pagestream web site for sure. If I were still working for the newspaper
I would want a customized Canadian Press dictionary, which leans toward
the British but has some of its own conventions.

Perhaps there could be some information released (perhaps it already is)
or a utility made available to create a customized dictionary.

As far as I know that directory 'Sys:Fonts/_bullet_outlines' is crucial in the
operation of PageStream!?!?!?!?

I'm astounded that such removal solved your problem!!!

Yes. Download it from Deron's website. However, to use it consistently, the Brit
version, you must edit EACH of your paragraph styles.

Select "Edit -> Define -> Text Styles" then choose one of your styles & click
the 'Edit' button. When the requestor opens, set the "Lang" field to 'British'
and do SAVE. From that point on each paragraph styled by that paragraph style
will use the British dictionary if you make a spelling check.

Note that the American dictionary is the default and in the same document you
can use both the American and the British dictionary. First para: American;
second para: British; etc.

Lastly, note that if you want all your docs styled to use the British
dictionary, then EACH of your paragraphs styles must specify that and you
should also open
File -> Preferences...
highlight 'Type' and then click the 'Edit...' button. When the 'Attributes'
window opens, then again set the 'Lang' field to 'British'.

At this point you're pure Brit as far as PageStream is concerned!
