I suspect this is the answer which most people are seeking.
With PGS 4.1.5.6 (AmigaOS), I'm frequently in the position where I
import a large image which covers more than the page. So then you need
to zoom far enough out to be able to resize the image by dragging the
edges inwards. Gets annoying when working with a lot of images.

If when importing (large) images, they were roughly resized so the entire
thing was viewable inside the current edit area, this would make importing
images much smoother.

Thanks,
Anthony.

Again, there's NO reason for you to be in the position you describe.
Make sure the "Place Graphic in Center" option is turned off in
preferences, then when you're ready to "Place" the image, the pointer
will be a square with a black edge along the top and left edges. Just
click and drag to the size you want as you place it on the page. If for
any reason, you want the image to come in full-size, double-click
instead of click and drag. The icon in the upper-right corner of the
Edit Palette determines whether the image is placed in its original
aspect ratio or follows the arbitrary aspect ratio you click and drag
to. Either way that icon is set, you can override that behavior with the
shift key. With graphics, the default is proportional.

PageStream has had this ability as far back as I can remember on the
Amiga and I suspect other platforms. I think Place in Center came later.

It was added when the first Macintosh version came out. It is considered
"proper" behavior on a Mac and I believe it became the default at that
time.

"Proper" on the Mac or not, I really think it's the source of this
controversy. People just don't know the consequences of that option
being there and its being set as the default. They assume it's something
they have no control over. I think that what originally happened with me
is that when that behavior changed in some version or other of
PageStream I wondered why and went looking for a way to get it back to
the way it was. Or it may have been mentioned in the long published
manual, and I always read new manuals cover-to-cover.
