Fit to screen wouldn't help me at all. Fit to page would.

(I usually work with a big area of pasteboard when loading in the
images, then sort them onto the pages.)

I would agree, although I'm not quite sure how much it would help you.
If it's the same as the current centering option, the images would still
have to moved off the page and, with a lot of pictures on the pasteboard
they could still be larger than you would want. But I do understand your
point. When you have the pasteboard, the size of the page is more
relevant than the size of the screen at a given moment.
