Just a warning, I'm swamped in emails and work and I'm just having a
hard time thinking things through today (really, this week so far since
getting back from St. Louis)!
Ok, someone has suggested that Import Text/Place Graphics could just be
a single menu item, Import, and that Export Text/Export Graphics could
be just a single menu item, Export.
I can't think of any reason why it can't be done. Everything I can think
of PageStream can deal with:
Text mode with cursor not place, Import would allow any graphic format
(same as current Place Graphic)
Text mode with cursor placed, Import would allow any text or graphic
format. (this one is different, in that it could allow inline graphics
directly imported. However, it would be easy enough to just do the same
thing as Import Text currently does)
Graphic mode, Import would allow any graphic format (same as current
Place Graphic)
Export would basically work the same. Object mode w/ selection -> Export
Graphic, text mode w/ selection -> Export Text. The only actual change
is that I have done some work on letting text functions operate on
selected text frames in object mode like PageStream2 used to do. So
selecting a text frame and choosing Export in object mode would then
give you a list of graphic filters plus text filters at that time.
So, I can't think of any feature in PageStream that would be negatively
effected and I do like the idea of 2 less menu items. Thoughts?

It appears to me that the present system does not require a new user to
read the manual to import or export things, while I believe this
proposed system would have to be explained, as above, before people
would get it.
And for we long-time users it would just be a change, the purpose of
which I don't really grok.

I dunno. I think it depends on your frame of reference. Plenty of
programs I have put "Import | Export..." under "File." The key is often
the "..." part indicating a submenu of what to import or export. Here
Deron is suggesting that the mode could be determined by the mode of the
cursor, text or objects. If I were to quibble, it would be that ignoring
the mode of the cursor and having the "..." subdivision might work as
well or better since you wouldn't have to think about it before
selecting "Import | Export..."; that is, picking "File | Import... |
Graphics" would put PageStream in Graphics mode if it wasn't already.
(Of course, this eliminates the advantage of eliminating a stage of
choices or code. Also, I think the word "Place" is unneeded, but it
could be used at this point; that is, after selecting "Import |
Graphics.") I don't think there's anything inherently confusing because
it's pretty much in line with common practice in many other
applications. It's natural to expect it to work this way.

HB,
According to my 18 yr old granddaughter, Kewl is no longer 'IN.'
Awesome is the latest verbal pause. Get with it.
