What platform?
If Linux, just open up Evince and do a screencapture.
I *think* ImageMagick also supports "converting" PDF files, but
I've never tried. It would probably output multiple files, one
for each page.
If Windows, then obtain FoxIt Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com), a
free alternative to Adobe Acrobat Reader (or just use Acrobat Reader if
you already have it installed), and again do a screencapture.
Additionally, you may be able to open a PDF document in The GIMP
(http://www.gimp.org), and it will import each page as a new layer (very
memory intensive, and may not work on non-Linux systems).
Sadly, while a Windows version of GIMP exists, it is not the
easiest beastie to find. Check http://www.gimp.org/windows/ for
more information, although it may not be the latest release
(currently 2.4.6; 2.5 is the new development branch and
shouldn't be used unless you *like* software crashing on you).
Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org) can also handle opening PDF
documents, but possibly only on Linux systems (Windows versions of
Inkscape are available but since the Windows print infrastructure isn't
based on PostScript, the required support libraries may not work
properly).
Once it's opened in Inkscape, use the Export Bitmap function to
save it as a PNG file; you can then use your preferred image
manipulation program (GIMP, ImageMagic, PaintShop Pro, etc) to
convert it to your required format.
If you're running Mac OS X, then ports of pretty much all Linux-based
software should be available to you somewhere, but I have no idea where,
as I don't run Mac software. Last I heard, it was part of the Darwin-X
project, but that's been a while (couple years, at least).
If Amiga, I don't know. I've been out of the Amiga scene too long to
help here, but ports of Linux software may be available here too. First
place I'd check is Aminet.
Finally, you might be able to try PDFEdit (http://pdfedit.petricek.net),
a QT-based PDF file editor (it edits the raw PDF file directly).
I've rarely used it as it's interface is, to put it nicely,
difficult, but it is *very* powerful at what it does, and may
support exporting PDF files as bitmaps.
