The older Amiga versions of PgS offered BME (Bit Map Editor) which
had an autotrace feature to convert bitmap line drawings to DR2D
structured images. After importing the DR2D to PageStream, it
could be exported again as an AI structured file, compatible
with a wider range of programs than DR2D.

The responses to this inquiry sound like BME has been
abandoned in the newer versions of PageStream. Is this
true?

BME is still around, but it really serves little purpose. BME is "Bit Map
Editor" and as such it is reasonably good and there are some effects for it
but nothing that compares with the GIMP, Photoshop, Photogenics, Paintshop
Pro, etc.

The trace functionality in BME was never very good, possibly sufficient for
very simple graphics but nothing I ever tried it with.

So although BME is still around it is more an indication of the lack of
utility it provides. I think Deron even suggested removing it a while back. I
do like that it is provided with PgS as it gives all users at least a minimal
ability to edit bitmaps, but for anything more than basic functionality it is
necessary to go to another application.

Personally, I think any effort that would be spent on BME is better utilized
on supporting newer Adobe Illustrator formats, or direct support for
photoshop images.

BME is still very useful to me.

I am includung kanji in a PGS document, and I scan the kanji in to ImageFX.
I then remove all the stroke numbers etc, and adjust the drawing to match
'my style', and save as a bitmap.
I then load it into BME, use trace to save as a DR2D file, and use that in
PGS.

OK, this is only in one single colour, but it allows me to scale the kanji
to any size I require.

I wouls sorely miss the exclusion of BME in pagestream.
Please keep it in, Deron.
