Hi Alexander, and PEAR dev

I am the Manager of Technology Services at OASIS, and also a
PHP
developer. So, I've got some background and interest in
your File
Formats::OpenDocument package.  In fact, I'm making a
presentation [2]
to the BostonPHP [1] group next month about using PHP to
read/write
ODF files. I'm not able to read your website and I'm
looking to find
out more about the status of the project.

Is the package under active development? It appears from
the list
archive that there hasn't been activity since the vote in
August
http://search.gmane.org
/search.php?group=gmane.comp.php.pear.devel&query=opendo
cument

Is it installable via PEAR? What is the best way to get the
code?

>From the PEPR proposal
(http://pear.php.net/pepr/pepr-proposal-show.php?id=439
) I found a
link where I could download the 0.1.0 tarball. Is this the
most recent
tested/stable source?

I also checked out the CVS source. It seems that the CVS
code is
slightly newer (as expected).

   pear install OpenDocument errors out.

Are you accepting volunteers to assist with the
development?

How does this package compare to other community projects
with the
same goals? I noticed another library project at
http://opendocumentphp.org
which released files within the last two
weeks. Has there been any discussion between that project
and yours?

In general, I notice a lot of programming activity around
ODF in
everything from Python to Perl, Ruby and Java, but not a lot
of PHP
programming tools or projects that bring ODF to the masses.
This is
not a critique of (PEAR nor) your project. In fact it's the
opposite.
I'm trying to gather and rally support in the PHP community
to
advance projects like File Format::OpenDocument. Is there
any other
information or examples that you think I should share with
the crowd
at BostonPHP?

[2] http://rund
lett.com/s5/oasis.html#slide14 (DRAFT, will eliminate
much of the first 12 slides while I'm trying to expand on
the real
'HOWTO' elements with real code that can be used)

Thanks,

Greg

Hi Greg, Alexander,

If I might step in, we strongly encourage all packages to
have 2 or more
lead developers, and OpenDocument has only 1. I notice that
there has
been zero activity for 6 months. I think it might be a good
time to ask
whether this package is orphaned? Either way, it would be
very good to
have another foot in the door.

Greg: to get started, if there are missing features or bugs
that you
have found, please open bugs at the bug tracker
http://pear.php.net/bugs/report.php?package=OpenDocument
 and as of
today, you can also attach patches to the bug report. As
PEAR functions
on a system similar to meritocracy, once your work adds up
to a critical
mass, direct CVS commit access is granted. In terms of
liaising with
the other project at sf, if you have the time and energy to
coordinate
with them and pool efforts here, that would be extremely
useful as well.
 Warm bodies are always appreciated.

As always, ask here if you have further questions on getting
started.

Thanks,
Greg

Hello Greg and Gregory.
I'm afraid that the tarball you have found is the latest
available code for
opendoc package.
The project is not orphaned, although there is low activity
in it.
Unfortunately, I'm being so busy with finishing my senior
year at college
and doing my diploma work, and I have so little time I can
devote to my
opendoc project. I will be very happy if someone joins the
project and I
hopefully will be able to get back to package as soon as
possible.
Greg (Rundlett), I will be very pleased if you join as a
lead developer,
just as Gregory (Beaver) pointed in his email, and I will
be open to
discussion and can provide you any information you need to
start
development.

Regarding the http://opendocumentphp.org
 - I guess it's a new project, that
was started later than I had begun my work on opendoc. I
will take a look at
it, it seems to be an interesting initiative.
