Hi,

unfortunately there was no reply to my email from last
Thursday. Here is
another try for a GSoC idea. In addition to the editing
feature for
Structures_DataGrid that I wrote about last week, the
proposal now
includes also a new PEAR package Structures_DataSource which
is meant to
be used both by Structures_DataGrid itself and also by other
PEAR
packages.

Here is the proposal text:

<<<
PEAR::Structures_DataGrid is a toolkit to render out data
from various
sources (like databases, CSV/XML file or RSS) into various
formats (like
HTML, CSV, XML or Excel spreadsheets). Pagination und
sorting
functionalites are also included.

An editing feature for the displayed records is currently
missing and
should be implemented. This includes modifications to the
existing
DataSource drivers to allow inserting and updating of
records.

To make the existing drivers of Structures_DataGrid more
flexible and to
make them usable also by other PEAR packages, all DataSource
drivers
should get subpackages of a new package
Structures_DataSource. These
packages could be used by other PEAR packages for reading
and writing
data from/into the various formats (like databases/SQL, CSV,
XML).

Possible mentor: Olivier Guilyardi, oliviergphp.net
>>>

Can anyone please advice about the next step? How can we get
this
proposal on www.php.net/ideas.php? More important: How can
we get this
proposal into the list on Google's SoC pages?

Regards,
Mark

I do not think there is necessary a need to add it to the
ideas page.
Once you can propose on March 14th, you can directly add it
to Google
SoC's page using their sign up form.

Please mention your mentor in the proposal (best with PEAR
account url).
The decision process for getting thins accepted is a bit
nebulous. Its
basically upto Rasmus to assign people that can then rate
the proposals.
In the end its Google though, that decides what gets in.

Lukas

Thanks for explaination. My understanding was that students
can only
apply to proposals that were entered by a mentoring
organization (here:
PHP). But I guess that "ideas" means that these
ideas are really only
ideas and not a closed list.

Okay, so.. to my understanding :
- PHP is the mentoring organization
- who are the mentors ? Can any PEAR member become mentor ?
Or are they
predetermined ?

yes

talk to rasmus .. essentially php determines the mentors ..
php also
rates the proposals .. however google makes the final
decision on what
proposals to accept.

Actually this year, the person to talk to is Marcus (helly)
as he is
the GSoC administrator.

To answer quickly, there is no predefined mentors, and in
order to
have your proposal accepted by the PHP group, yes, you have
to post it
to ideas.php so that google can give grants to projects.
(more
proposal == more grants)

try that "helly [azat] php [dozot] net"
