I swear by streams in PHP5 ;). But curl is a work of
wizardry and I doubt it could ever be completely replaced.

If nobody else is interested I'd be happy to help roll a
HTTP_Request2 release and help out where possible. I have
two PHP5 packages (Yadis, and upcoming OpenID) which
currently rely on HTTP_Request which prevents them from
being totally PHP4 free. Let me know how I can help out.

Cool.

What is the purpose of all these adapters instead of just
making one
well-tested implementation that works everywhere (e.g.
socket based)?

I'd help test, test, test. So let me know if you need
feedback.
