Read-Only Pebble account access for a Members-Only blog scenario?

Are there any Pebble features which could be used to create
a members-only blog?

Ideally, what might be nice is a read-only access feature
which would
be extended to all current user types (admin, owner,
publisher and
contributor), and meanwhile, a new user type would also be
introduced
called "member". The only privileges allowed for
the member user
would be read access to the blog material as well as the
ability to
post comments, use track-backs, and link RSS/Atom feeds to
the blog.

A member user would need to be set up and administered
slightly
differently than other users in that a member user should
not be able
to change the member password because this would allow one
member to
lock out all other members. A password "setting"
feature (as opposed
to the usual password "resetting" feature) could
instead be provided
to allow the admin to set a new [specific] password for the
member
account.

The member account could be used by a potentially large
number of
people without the burden involved in administering a large
number of
users; think of an online classroom situation where a member
account
could be used by the students of the class, but those who do
not have
any sort of account would not be able to view or participate
in the
class.

Is there any sort of way currently, or are there any plans
to add this
sort of feature in Pebble? If not, then would you have any
sort of
advice on how best to go about implementing this feature in
Pebble?

Thanks

David McLure

p.s. I would add that a password "setting" feature
might actually be a
nice feature to have for all account types, as I typically
find myself
needing to log out and log back in as the new user to change
their
default password to something more secure than simply
"password" after
adding a new user.

Hi David,

So in summary you are asking for two features...

(1) read-only access to blogs for blog "members"
(2) the ability to set a password to something specific

I think (1) is covered in the new release (see
http://www.simongbrown.com/blog/2007/04/11/private_
blogs.html for a
basic rundown) and (2) is pretty straightforward (I'll try
to get this
in the 2.1 final release this week).

Does that cover everything?

Cheers
Simon

The changes to allow passwords to be explicitly specified
have been
committed.
