Thread: Making a blog private

Making a blog private

I'm not following exactly how to make a blog private. I have
a list of
blog readers on the properties page but that doesn't prevent
me from
viewing the blog and posting comments. Also, I don't see a
way to edit
any of the lists under the Security heading - is that what
I'm supposed
to do? What is a step-by-step for making a blog private?

Thanks,

David

There is some more information in the online help, but
basically you
just highlight/select those users you want to restrict
access to.
Additionally, all blog owners/publishers/contributors
assigned to the
blog also get access too.

Again, thanks, I got this to work. It's a little confusing
to me though
- in order to block out "non-readers", you need to
go to the blog
properties page and select the users who can read the blog
in the "Blog
readers" list, then click the "Save
Properties" button. If you don't
select anyone, then this means that anyone can read the
blog? And if you
only select a subset of the owners/publishers/contributors,
does this
mean those not selected can't read the blog? If yes, when
would such
functionality make sense (e.g. a blog contributor can't read
the blog)?
Wouldn't it be easier to just have a check box that says,
"Make blog
private" and, when checked, only
owners/publishers/contributors can view
it? Again, not critical, but I'd be curious to know.

Thanks,

David

Yes, this is correct.

Not quite. If you've selected one or more users in the blog
readers
list, the complete set of people that can access the blog is
the union
of all owners, publishers, contributors and readers.

Easier yes, but that doesn't cater for the use case where
you want to
let people read the blog but not actually have any
privileges. For
example, I run a private blog where friends and family can
view
photos. They are required to login but don't have the
ability to
contribute, etc.
