Right,

So, I've been searching to find out which external hard
drives /
enclosures are compatible with Linux.

My guess is that most are, but I am having no luck googling
for any that
say they are or are not compatible.

Ideally I'd like to be able to go buy an external enclosure
that can
take 500/750Gb drives with USB2 and firewire on the back.

There are hundreds out there, but until I get one home I'm
not sure it
will play nice with Hippie-OS.

Any mongers got recommendations for or against specific
products?

My experience is that everything just works with Linux
assuming you
have a reasonably up to date distro.

I'm using a couple of Freecom things here - but I wouldn't
assume
that it's critical.

All of the ones that are USB mass-storage devices will work
on Linux.

Avoid Belkin and Maxtor. They will work, but the products
are crap.

I tend to use Seagate or Western Digital drives in any old
cheap
enclosure I can get my paws on. The last batch were Icy Dock
units
from Scan.

The enclosures start at just £4, so it's not as if you're
out of
pocket if you somehow manage to find the one model out of
thousands
that won't work under Linux.
