Yar m'hearties! A call to arms!

Perl appears to be rather under-represented over on
http://programming.red
dit.com/

Contrast these:
   http://pr
ogramming.reddit.com/search?q=perl (9 results)
   http://
programming.reddit.com/search?q=python (28)
   http://pr
ogramming.reddit.com/search?q=ruby (22)
   http:/
/programming.reddit.com/search?q=haskell (19)

There's more hype than you can shake a stick at over the
more hip
and trendy languages like Python, Ruby and Haskell. That's
all well
and good, but I for one would like to see more about Perl.

A certain mr_chromatic has been diligently posting links on
Perl 6
and Parrot updates and I've recently submitted some of
Larry's talks
on Perl philosophy. But apart from that, Perl is most
sparsely
represented in the Reddit mindset.

Maybe it's because we're all too busy doing real work with
Perl to hang
around fanboy sites talking about how Perl rocks and notPerl
sucks.
Or perhaps it's because we already have our own monasteries
for that
purpose

Anyway, it would of course be wrong of me to suggest that
you should
all rush over there now and upvote all the Perl articles.
But I do
encourage you to post any links to interesting blogs or
other online
Perl articles that you come across, old or new.

Although reddit has gone rapidly downhill since the Digg
invasion,
there is still a smattering of intelligent conversation to
be had.
So like Perl, it's not dead yet.

BTW: Post articles to the programming sub-reddit. Don't
bother with
the main reddit.com - it'll get bot-voted out of existence
in seconds
unless you put "Ron Paul" in the title.

Mm. Your BTW is telling, do we really want to waste our time
trying to
promote Perl to the Diggnation who are, quite frankly, a
bunch of jerks.
Perhaps we could spend our time more profitably trying to
get Perl
articles on Artima. The "we" in this case doesn't
include me so go ahead
and try it if you feel it is important.

There might be better places to promote Perl to than Digg
(or Reddit
(sp?)). Heck I've seen better coverage of Perl on 4chan,
honest. They
post Perl scripts as part of their /i/nvasion boards.

No, that would indeed be a waste of time. But most of the
real jerks tend to
hang out on the main reddit page or other sub-reddits.
programming.reddit.com
is by no means "clean" but there is a good
cross-section of people from
many different languages (particularly from the functional
programming
community). I think the cross-pollination of ideas between
them is very
healthy. I just think we need to spread some more Perl
pollen.

I don't know Artima, but from first glance it looks very
Java/Enterprise.
We might not be too welcome there.

Digg (or Reddit

Digg is a lost cause IMHO and has been for quite some time.
There's still
some hope for Reddit. Not much admittedly.

My favourite programming site of the moment is http://lambda-the-ult
imate.org/
The focus is on programming language research/design, with a
particular bent
on FP. It's very grown up compared to Digg/Reddit, but
quite possibly not as
much fun

Yes and yes. Proggit, I've found, is 90% high school kids
that think
they know all about programming, but haven't written
anything more than
"Hello World". This results in instances where I
wish I had a large
stick for beating commenters senseless, but I digress...

There is a definite preference for Python and Ruby on
proggit, so too
actively mentioning "Perl" is going to get you
modded down by the
bot-like people. ("Perl is unreadable! Downmod! Now
back to
pornography!")

Examples of successful titles I've submitted:

 * Moose vs. roll-your-own OO [perl]
 * Teamwork with screen and vim
 * Why I use perl and still hate dynamic language weenies
too
 * Perl's object system really isn't that bad

Unsuccessful titles:

 * Profiling your Catalyst + DBIx::Class application
 * new Perl test harness is out; support for parallel test
running

Basically, people want general articles that aren't too
Perl-specific.
"Cool new way of doing OO", yes. "Specifics
on the details of specific
Perl libraries", no. (I want to read those, though; so
keep putting
them on use.perl and Planet Perl

JMHO. Be careful what you submit, because the word
"Perl" in your title
automatically makes people mad for some reason. (I don't
get it. I like
reading about Python, Ruby, Haskell, etc...)

Agreed. I regret visiting more and more each day... but I
still
visit

Or, [pics] [NSFW]. Maybe that's the ticket:

  * Perl takes her clothes off! [pics] [NSFW]
