I finally installed ZOOM on my NetBSD system; this may
be of interest for others.

I run NetBSD 3.0 in a i386 machine.

NetBSD (and the rest of BSDs), as of today (Sept. 25,
2006) have outdated versions of the Net-Z3950 family
of perl modules: only Net-Z3950 (version 0.32), no
Net-Z3950-ZOOM, no Net-Z3950-Simpleserver.

(I tried to install ZOOM via perl -MCPAN etc, but it
did not work at this stage).

In order to install Net-Z3950-ZOOM, yaz has to be
updated also. The one available is 2.1.6.

First, uninstall all existing versions of Net-Z3950
and yaz.

Then proceed to install a new version of yaz 2.1.28.
For this, follow the instructions at
http://www.netbsd.org/Documentation/pkgsrc/creating.html

with an important difference: instead of bmake as the
page says, use make.

(For those who want to use SRU, be sure to follow the
instructions to include the dependencies to libxslt,
libxml2 . )

After installing a new version of yaz, install ZOOM
via perl -MCPAN (I did not try to repeat the steps to
install it via the pkgsrc system. It seems possible,
but is too much work).

So far, I seem to have a working ZOOM module.

Thanks for pushing through with this, and congratulations on
getting
it all to work. I guess this is a big black mark against
NetBSD as a
development platform for Z39.50/SRU applications.

(For what it's worth, we mostly use Debian GNU/Linux
ourselves, which
means that the packages for that platform tend to be more up
to date
than those for other platforms. So if you have a choice on
what
platform to use, Debian is good
