Hi,

I'm Andy Schafer and I'm new here. I am working on building
a website
and have learned HTML, Javascript, and Perl. Now I am
working on
learning CGI and I went to install the Apache personal web
server on
my computer but could not get it up and running. So then I
decided
that I would just use my current free host, Angelfire, to
test my
scripts but found out that they don't support Perl/CGI for
the free
accounts.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions for
how to run
my scripts on my computer or a "sandbox" type site
on the net that I
could use to test scripts for free. My only other
alternative is to
set up the paid host I plan to use and do all my testing
there but I
really don't want to start paying for my hosting service
until I have
learned enough to get my site running.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Andy

You should solve that problem first, before looking at other
places.
Otherwise, we'll be wasting our time talking about working
around what should
be the most obvious path.

If you're using some version of Linux, find some support for
it. There are
online forums for just about everything in use out there.

I installed plain Apache on my Windows XP box and login
to localhost to run scripts from a client, like IE or
Firefox.
Installation isn't difficult if you read the documentation.

Andy,

I'd recommend that you:

1) Download and install the Apache webserver on your PC from

http://httpd.ap
ache.org/download.cgi. This is a free program.

2) Download and install ActiveState perl on yout PC from
http://www.activestate.com/store/activeperl/download/.
 This is a
free program.

3) Follow the instructions at this website to enable
Perl/CGI
functionality in Apache:
http://support.activestate.com/faq/activeperl-and-ap
ache-cgi

4) Open a web browser on your PC and point it to
http://localhost/test.pl

5) Make sure you have the Windows firewall running, as
Apache is a
common target for hackers -- particularly when that
webserver has
CGI scripts written by newbies!

6) Note that migrating applications from Windows to a Linux
server
can be a hassle.

Hope that helps.
