Help!

I had a power failure the other night, and apparently my
drive 
decided to loose data in /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.0 .  After
turning 
back on the power this directory's size is at 0, and
lost+found has 
a bunch of files in it.  A lot of software I try to tun
tells 
me "error while loading shared libraries: libperl.so:
cannot open 
shared object file: No such file or directoy" (oddly, I
can not even 
use vi or vim without giving the full path.)  I was able to
get 
Apache running again by commenting out the line in perl.conf
that 
points to the mod_perl.so file, but obviously my scripts do
not 
execute now. (I assume this somehow points back to
libperl.so?)

I tried to compile 5.8.8, but I am getting errors at the end

of "make test"...

/root/perl-
5.8.8/preload /root/perl-5.8.8/libperl.a ./perl TEST

Anyone have any ideas how I can get this up and running
again?

BTW:  I am running rehat 9 on an old Dual Processor BP6
machine.
